Before his Oscar-nominated performance in The Hurt Locker, Jeremy Renner was fighting to land smaller supporting roles in movies. Now, however, his career is taking off, and he seems to be getting offers for all kinds of major headlining gigs. This week he may have just landed his biggest role yet with the announcement that he will be starring alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 4. Not only will he be starring in a major blockbuster, but Paramount also has him in mind to carry on the franchise if Tom Cruise calls it quits after this particular installment. Sounds to me like Renner has officially hit the Hollywood A-list.
Although there was some concern that M:I4 might not happen after Cruise’s last film Knight & Day came in below expectations at the box office, it appears that they are once again moving forward with it. Brad Bird is still directing, and although the story is being kept under wraps, Renner will play an operative working together with Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt. What do you think, is this a good move for Renner and the right choice for the Mission: Impossible franchise? M:I4 is scheduled to hit theatres on December 16th, 2011.
