These days a movie doesn’t even need to perform particularly well at the box office in order to receive a follow-up. Case in point: Piranha 3D. After a 10 million gross opening weekend, Dimension Films has announced a sequel to the horror-comedy. Director Alexandre Aja and producer Mark Canton will return, although no word on whether Aja would necessarily direct again or just produce. Canton was quoted saying, “It’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.” While there aren’t any major details on the story or what cast members might return, one idea has the film being set in Thailand during a massive party.
I suppose this news isn’t too surprising. Considering Piranha 3D‘s low budget, I’m sure it will turn a profit. The solid reviews and word-of-mouth should also help once the film hits DVD, where I think it will build up an even better cult following. While I’m excited about the idea of a sequel, I do hope that Aja will move on to other projects, such as the previously reported Cobra: The Space Pirate film. What are your thoughts on a Piranha 3D sequel?
