Warner Bros. Developing New Live Action / CG Bugs Bunny Movie

Apparently Hollywood just can’t get enough of these damn live action / CG hybrid movies based on popular cartoons. The massive success of Alvin and the Chipmunks (and, to a lesser extent, Garfield) definitely seems to be what has set off this latest wave of films including the upcoming Yogi Bear flick, and a handful of others in development including Heathcliff, Tom and Jerry, and Speedy Gonzales. Now another Looney Tunes character is coming back to the big screen in the same unflattering format, and he is probably the most recognizable one of all: Bugs Bunny. Warner Brothers has hired David Berenbaum, the writer of Elf and The Spiderwick Chronicles, to pen the script… need I say more?

According to Deadline New York, the WB is eager to revive Looney Tunes, and they think this is the best way to do it. Based on the failure of the 2003 film Looney Tunes: Back In Action, I guess I can’t blame them for thinking that, but I have a feeling there are a lot of loyal Looney Tunes fans who will be less than enthused to see Bugs make the transition to CG animation. Then again, Warner Brothers has also started doing Looney Tunes shorts again, this time in 3-D, attaching them to certain family-friendly films starting with Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. The reception has been fairly positive.

It’s still not very clear if Bugs will be the only cartoon character in the film, or if any others will make an appearance, but the idea of a Bugs Bunny in a solo movie doesn’t seem all that appealing to me. I think we can all agree that what they really need is a Space Jam sequel with a new line-up of NBA stars! What do you think, could a live action / CG Bugs Bunny movie actually work? Check out a clip from the most recent Looney Tunes animated short below.

Well Elf was pretty good and I heard that Spiderwick was pretty good as well.
But still this shit sounds awful.

If it’s set in the real world with some b-list stars then i’m disgusted. Not interested. But those shorts did look quite good. Stay in the looney tunes world and it could be fun. Needs to have Daffy in tho. That’s the perfect buddy movie right there. Maybe set it in a world which is falling apart as they become more and more irrelevent. The Looniverse is collaspsing and they have to go kick some 11 yr old kids to stay alive.

Why do they have to mix live action and animation. I have no problem with CGI. It’s just how it is now. But stick with all animation please. However the problem I have is that the WB Looney Tunes characters are too heavily defined by Mel Blanc’s voice and the iconic directors like Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, Robert McKimson etc. Their work was distinctive and recognizable. The CGI now just seems to be corporate-standard renditions. This is different from Disney, where no one really knew the individual artists all that much (unless you were a diehard fan). Disney himself was the dominant artistic force. And Mickey Mouse, for example, had become a corporatized symbol very early on, and ceased to be a real character. Bugs continued to be a character until the theatrical shorts disappeared in the early ’60’s.

So they’re remaking/have remade Marmaduke, Yogi Bear, Smurfs and now this? Hollywood is truly creatively bankrupt.

And this is from someone who remembered Space Jam 1 and thought how frikkin awesome it was that Michael Jordan was in a movie with Bugs Bunny (oh the 90s).

  • What ever I LOVE to watch the Bugs Bunny in a Movie.
It’s not happend after loony tunes back in action and Space Jam/.

Well, I say a cover picture with Brendon Fraser and some chick. Looks a lot like Who framed Roger Rabbit. I really think they should animate the real people when they cross over into toon town. If that is how they are set on doing it. What is the plot?
