New To Theatres This Weekend: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, The Expendables, Eat Pray Love

Three major releases are competing for your dollar at the multiplex this weekend, although it’s unclear whether any of them will ultimately find an audience. The marketing for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has been going into overdrive this past week, but it still does not seem like it’s attracting much interest outside of the hardcore comic book fans. Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables, meanwhile, has assembled an impressive line-up of action stars both new and old, but its old school sensibility and R-rating may keep it from cashing in. Then there is Eat Pray Love starring Julia Roberts, which is hoping to capture a completely different demographic despite poor reviews. In limited release, we also have the Australian crime thriller Animal Kingdom starring Guy Pearce, and Tales from Earthsea, an animated film from Hayao Miyazaki’s son Goro. What will you be checking out this weekend?

Saw it at a midnight show in Austin TX last night. Can’t wait to hear your review.

They showed a montage of Dolph Lungren’s old 1980s training videos before the movie started and Quentin Tarantino was on the credits as a PA; they were pretty entertaining.

I should clarify that I saw the Expendibles. I forgot there other movies don’t have Sly in them.

I’m kinda hoping Scott Pilgrim bombs. They might encourage more of the same if it does succeed. Haven’t watched the movie but I read the comic(tho admittedly a few funny moments in the trailer), pretty boring really and overrated as hell, seems like its trying to copy those weird mangas like Wallflowers or something. I say just watch anime, read manga or play some Japanese action games like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden, you’ll have far more fun and enjoy ourself alot more. And furthermore stocking your comic with reference to all sorts of stuff related to geek culture DOES NOT automatically make it funny.
Expendables I’ll get on dvd, I watched Earthsea, sorta felt like a Princess Mononoke but lacked the epicness and the awesome characters of that movie.

  • I urge, everyone, that if any of your nearby cinemas are showing Animal Kingdom. An amazing Australian movie, rivaling Wake in Fright for greatest Australian Movie, no one, especially Australians, have seen.
