Josh Brolin to Co-Star in Diablo Cody’s Young Adult?

We recently learned that Jason Reitman’s next film will find him reteaming with Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody for Young Adult. When that announcement came, we knew that Charlize Theron was set to star as “a divorced writer who returns to her midwest hometown and reconnects with her old flame–now married with kids.” Now, according to Showbiz 411, it looks like Josh Brolin may fill the role of the old flame Theron visits.

Although Brolin wouldn’t have been the first actor I thought of for the male lead in this film, I could see him working well in it. Even though he’s mostly known for playing more intimidating parts, Brolin comes across as funny and laid back in interviews. A film like Young Adult could provide him a chance to break away from his usual roles and really surprise some people. For that matter, Charlize Theron should have the chance to show off her comedic skills as well (if you never watched her stint on Arrested Development, I suggest you check it out). If Brolin should take on the part, it will add to his already crowded schedule. For the remainder of this year alone he has Oliver Stone’s Wall Street 2, Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, and the Coen Brothers’ True Grit set for release. Maybe that will be enough for people to forget about Jonah Hex.

What do you think of Brolin’s potential casting in Young Adult? Is he a good fit for a Jason Reitman film?
