The first film "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is near perfect a mystery/thriller there is out there. That being said, the second installment is inevitably going to be compared to its predecessor, and for good reason, I understand that equation. But "Played with Fire" is still top notch storytelling, and it easily beats 90% of the thrillers coming out of Hollywood. If you let it stand on its own merits it's really an excellent film. I disagree with Aaron though, you would be a little lost if you haven't seen the first one, and would lose out on the nuiances of Lisbeth's character and her history with Blomkvist. A little advice for those who have not seen "Played with Fire". Try and let go of the first one in comparing the two and just enjoy it. 4/4.

have you read the book?

Lisbeth tones down her appearance and does see Blomquist at all so the film is just reflecting this!!

Well made. Though the cast looks nothing like described in the books. Zalachenko's supposed to be wiry, lean etc. With a decent casting director and a bigger budget, this could have been something.

Yeah, Tomas Alfredson's brother. I guess Tom got the talent!
I love the first movie and I'm looking forward to seeing this one. In the trailers it appears that Lisbeth looks totally different, no make-up, piercings, etc... what's the deal?

Has anyone seen the final movie and care to comment? I heard they brought back the original director. As for this one I guess it's still worth a watch because it's part of a trilogy.

Yeah, I generally agree with this, though I would probably knock another half star off my rating. There is no doubt Lisbeth is an amazing character and Rapace does an amazing job of bringin her to the screen, but I think one of the things I really loved about the first film, the interactions and relationship between Blomkqvist and Lisbeth, is almost missing entirely from this one.

While I did enjoy the action for the most part, the heart and even the somewhat light-hearted interplay between the two main characters was gone and that detracted from the film overall.

Flaws aside, I'm definitely interested to see the final chapter.
