Steve Carell and Sandra Bullock to Star in Tom Perrotta’s The Abstinence Teacher

It’s been a few years now since we’ve heard anything from Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. After the movie became a surprise hit back in 2006, it ended up getting nominated for a handful of Oscars and winning two of them, so you’d think they would be in high demand in Hollywood. However, they’ve supposedly been pretty picky about their next project, and up until now they haven’t actually gotten anything new off the ground. Most recently they signed on to direct Will, a comedy written by Demetri Martin that would star Zach Galifianakis and Paul Rudd, but now this week there is a report that they may be moving forward with another project they’ve been attached to since late 2006: an adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s novel The Abstinence Teacher.

According to The Playlist, the latest issue of Production Weekly had an update on the project, and it appears to have attracted some major talent in the form of Steve Carell and Sandra Bullock. With names like that attached, it seems a safe bet that this movie will be getting made ASAP.

Perrotta also wrote Little Children and Election, and although I haven’t read the book (it’s been on my shelf for a while now), The Abstinence Teacher seems to be another “satirical sex dramedy”, if you will. The plot revolves around a high school sex ed teacher named Ruth Ramsey (Bullock) and her daughter’s soccer coach Tim Mason (Carell) who are at odds with each other. She is very liberal, while he is a former druggie who has turned to religion to save him, and when he leads the soccer team in prayer, she takes offense. What do you think, does this sound like an intriguing premise and a good match for all involved? Will Little Miss Sunshine turn out to be a flash in the pan, or can Dayton and Faris prove themselves to be more than one hit wonders?

I loved Little Miss Sunshine and I’m very eager to see what they do with this one. The premise sounds hilarious in and of itself so I’m defiantly gonna keep this on my radar.

    Lookly ghastly.

I’m pretty sure I’m one in a very small minority that really, really liked Little Miss Sunshine (so much hate for that movie and I have no idea why…)

There’s such an odd combination going on with this one… Sandra Bullock? Shudder. But Election was a pretty solid dark comedy… and I do love jabs at religion…

  • Sandra Bullock is one of the most talanted actors in the world.
