Robert Rodriguez in Talks to Direct Deadpool

It’s been rumoured for at least a few months now that Robert Rodriguez had been offered the director’s chair for Fox’s upcoming Deadpool movie. While no one seemed to want to confirm the story, it wasn’t all that hard to believe given that Rodriguez had just produced two films for Fox: Predators and Machete. Last week, however, the rumour moved one step closer to becoming a reality. According to Steven Zeitchik at the L.A. Times, Rodriguez is now in active negotiations with Fox to direct the film, and the deal has “moved beyond the casual discussion stage and into the more substantive realm of deal points.”

The proposed Deadpool movie is a spin-off from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, with Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the smart ass assassin. It seems a bit strange that he may finish shooting Green Lantern only to jump right back into another different superhero role, but apparently studios can’t get enough of the guy. The script was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland).

Rodriguez has directed a comic book movie before with Frank Miller’s Sin City, but never a straight up superhero flick (although I suppose El Mariachi could be considered a superhero of sorts). Personally I’m not that excited by this news. I’m sure he could do the job, but I am more interested in some of the other projects that Rodriguez had been cooking up, like his futuristic thriller Nerveracker. Besides, I think a lot of fans were unhappy with how Deadpool was treated in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and they don’t want to see that vision of the character continued on the big screen at all. Would you be interested in a Deadpool movie directed by Robert Rodriguez?

The only reason people are excited is because it’s been stated by Reynolds multiple times that this movie would be “Classic Deadpool”, meaning; nothing like XMOW. Which is a good thing. If this movie is done right by Rodriguez or whomever, it will be a very different kind of movie than what we’ve seen. The Zombieland writers is a great first step, this may be another one in the right direction.

Yeah as long as it sticks to the comic style Deadpool you can count me in. Now all they need to do is make it rated R but I know that won’t happen.

That’s how that wouldn’t suck but how many films could he shoot at one time its a more and more kinda thing
