Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch Trailer

If you’ve been unimpressed by all the marketing for Zack Snyder’s upcoming movie Legend of the Guardians up until now and started to worry that maybe he had gone soft, this new trailer should put your mind at ease. I think it’s safe to say that his next movie Sucker Punch will instantly restore him to the status of deity in the eyes of fanboys. It’s got hot chicks, machine guns, explosions, samurai warriors, planets, robots, martial arts, jet packs, dragons and, of course, plenty of slow-mo. If you thought Kick-Ass felt manufactured to create an artificial geekgasm, well… you ain’t seen nothing yet.

It appears that Zack Snyder has discovered the same secret that The Wachowski Brothers, Guillermo Del Toro and Christopher Nolan stumbled onto… and that is, if you set your movie in a dream world, you can do whatever the hell you want. It doesn’t have to make sense or follow the rules of physics. The story revolves around a young girl in a mental institution who retreats to an alternate reality in her mind as a coping mechanism. I’ll give Zack Snyder credit, this trailer cranks it up to 11… I just don’t know if I can handle a whole movie of this. Sucker Punch stars Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Carla Gugino, Jena Malone, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Chung, and Jon Hamm, and it hits theatres on March 25th, 2011.     Actually Sean, even dream worlds have to make sense to a certain degree Sean. Because once a writer or director applies laws to the world they create you have to follow them. Break them and you could wreck havoc with the narrative you’ve established and risk loosing the audience. It’s happened many times and those movies usually end up being trash.

    That’s why I appreciate Nolan’s ability to create new landscapes, with intricate new fantastical rules yet create entertaining narratives that make the audience go wow…he’s a damn special director.

    I like Zack and his body of work up till this point. 300 was damn entertaining and over the top, while Watchmen held true to it’s source.

    This trailer looks cool but kinda feels familiar to me. I guess it’s kind of a mesh of a lot of different fantasy movies and games rolled into one. Maybe when I see the movie fleshed out, Zyder will hit me with a few narrative surprises. I’ll catch it when it surfaces.

    Well like synders othe work looks like a shot ton of visual flair, which is what I go to him for. I never expect much else, if anything he always delivers on interesting visuals. At least the story seems interesting a little The Fall meets Pans Labyrnth.

    Looks insane! I, unlike a lot, enjoy Zack Snyder’s stuff. Though I agree with Sean that the visual effects might be a little hard to take in. I hope there’s some attention to the plot, instead of it being just all-out action.

    Btw, Jay’ll love this. It has a female singing “Aaaaaaah”

    It’s almost cliche to say this, but that looked like a videogame. I had no idea what that was about. I just curious to see how on earth he’s going to pull that together.

    Sadly I think this movie will bomb, along with Scott Pilgrim. This is hard core geek stuff, something that the wast majority of the general public has no idea about or interest in, no matter how awesome it looks.

    And this stuff looks pretty fucking awesome for the most part. The actresses don’t bring up much hope in that it will be well acted.

  • I don’t know what you are thinking Swarez – guns, chicks, iconic imagery, explosions, fantasy, alt reality…it appears to be a cash machine, i.e., Sin City and 300.

    Yeah but people got tired of that over stylized look right after 300 and Sin City. The Spirit bombed badly and it had all the similar elements as this and the afore mentioned films.

  • The Spirit was directed by a first timer and it showed. Synder is not a first timer. Watchmen kicked ass; this is Watchmen without the heaviness. If this has only a halfway decent 3rd act and some snappy one liners it will produce. I willing to bet a 100 of whatever currency u carry.

    Watchmen didn’t do as well as they hoped. The general public doesn’t know if a film is directed by a first timer or not. I think they looked at The Spirit and thought it was a Sin City clone, which in a way it was, and had no interest in seeing it.
    What I’m saying is that I think that interest in these overly stylized action films just isn’t there with Joe Q Public.
    Plus this is an all female lead with actresses we’ve never seen before. When was the last time an all female action film did well?

    I once watched a movie that sucked just cuz that girl was in it. She looks so perfect that it is just wrong.

    I don’t give care if this movie is complete dogshit, that trailer alone has put a whole bunch of barely-related yet awesome concepts into 2 minutes.

    Samurai, miniguns, steampunk WWII, babes, stylish action. Never has a film been so gratuitous in its attempt to grab the fanboy market and I’m sold.
