Although this is not yet 100% confirmed, it’s looking like there is a pretty good chance that Ed Norton’s replacement for The Avengers has been found, and it will be none other than Mark Ruffalo. After the news came out earlier in the week that Norton would not be reprising his role as Bruce Banner or The Hulk, there were rumours that Joaquin Phoenix was under consideration for the role. Now it appears that there is an offer on the table for Ruffalo, although we have conflicting reports on just how far along the negotiations are.
According to Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood, Ruffalo is in “late-stage discussions” with Marvel to join The Avengers. However, The Hollywood Reporter has since done some fact-checking of their own, and they maintain that although an offer has been made, Ruffalo has not made a decision and still has yet to meet with director Joss Whedon.
If they do end up closing the deal, it will be a somewhat strange choice for the part. Ruffalo is a great actor with a fantastic resume that includes Shutter Island, Zodiac, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Brothers Bloom. He’s also been getting rave reviews for his performance in The Kids Are All Right, but do you really need serious acting chops to play Bruce Banner? It’s not like his name will be a big draw either way, but he is known for doing great work in supporting roles, which I suppose puts him one up on Norton (according to Marvel, anyway). What do you think, is Ruffalo an inspired choice, or not really an actor you can see as The Hulk?
