Avatar: Special Edition Returns to 3-D Theatres in Late August

Well, ask and you shall receive. Yesterday I posted news about the proposed Titanic 3-D re-release which is still a couple of years away, but I also wondered why we still hadn’t heard an official release date for the extended cut of James Cameron’s Avatar coming back to theatres. Today 20th Century Fox has issued a press release confirming the re-release of Avatar, and offering details on where and when you’ll be able to add to the movie’s $2.7 billion gross.

As promised, Avatar will indeed return to 3-D screens at the end of August… August 27th to be exact. The movie will feature eight minutes of additional scenes, including new creatures and action sequences. It seems carefully planned so as not to conflict with any other major 3-D releases, although it could potentially hurt the Weinsteins’ Piranha 3D, which hits theatres a week before that, or Sony’s Resident Evil: Afterlife, which is out two weeks later.

Avatar: Special Edition will be a limited engagement in 3-D theatres only (including IMAX), although they haven’t said exactly how long the release window will be. International re-release dates can be found here. Do you plan on returning to Pandora one more time, or are you perfectly content to watch it on DVD and Blu-ray in “mind-numbing” 2-D?

  • I can’t get enough, yes I’ll be seeing it again. It will be interesting if the crappy summer slate we are experiencing will make this even bigger than anyone expects?! good, more power to ORIGINAL material!

No more 3-D please! 3-D’d to death and also Avatar’d to death!

Need more innovative and original 2-D material!!

  • TheAllKnowingGod

Because we haven’t had 110 years of innovative and original 2D material already?

I’m very happy with my 2D blu-ray on my 120″ screen. It looks beautiful. Saying that I’ll probably check it out in 3D again but not in IMAX though, I thought “regular”3D was a lot better for some reason.

  • Bryan

    Once is enough for me.

  • Captain N

This is bittersweet. I hate Avatar and would not like to see it in theaters again; however, I do like the sound of it potentially hurting Resident Evil: Afterlife, which I hate more.

    I wonder…
In the future will we need to use 2D glasses to convert all the 3-D movies into 2-D?
This is if 3-D tech in the future is done with out needing glasses…..

As Feed Rarrington said “3-D is the future”
    opps.. Reed Farrington

  • 3d is an experience and one of the few “live action” flicks to do it right.

That being said, ill probably watch it again even though this movie is about as original as transporter compared to the big hit.

  • Nate

Hey maybe those 8 minutes make the story original and flesh out all the one dimensional characters!

  • Mrespony

Avatar needs to be seen in 3-D otherwise the blandness of it all is too much to bear. Plus, the CG has immediately obvious flaws that kill the illusion of Pandora and it’s creatures when viewed in 2-D.

James Cameron: Your money, I want it.
