Gore Verbinski to Direct Walter Mitty Remake Next?

It’s a big news week for Gore Verbinski. We’ve already seen the trailer for his upcoming animated film Rango (looking good, by the way), and now there’s news of Verbinski’s next potential project, a remake of the 1947 comedy The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The original film starred Danny Kaye as a meek, daydreaming writer who imagines himself in heroic situations. But when he gets caught up in a real-life adventure, he reconsiders how much of a hero he can actually become. The script for the remake has been written by Steve Conrad, who previously worked with Verbinski on The Weather Man. I’m sure that the story will be updated to modern day, but other than that I’m not sure what changes are in store.
This project has been simmering in development hell for years now, so it’s good to see that it just might finally get off the ground. (I remember reading the original short story in high school and found it quite charming.) Many comic actors have been attached at one point or another, including Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Owen Wilson. There’s no word if any of those actors would still be interested or even up for consideration anymore. Pure speculation on my part: maybe Verbinski will opt for his go-to guy, Johnny Depp instead. What are your thoughts on this latest remake?
