A few weeks back we posted a strange teaser for Gore Verbinski’s next film, Rango, and expressed bewilderment as a single animated wind-up fish slowly traversed the screen. Now this week the veil of secrecy has finally been lifted and the first official trailer has dropped over at Apple.com. And you know what? For the first time in a long while, a CGI film with talking animals actually has me somewhat interested.
Rango appears to be about a chameleon (voiced by Johnny Depp), who is a stranger to the Mojave Desert, struggling to survive in a harsh environment reminiscent of the Wild West. While the words “From the Director of Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Johnny Depp” will probably be enough to sell most people on this movie, I am really digging the character designs and the quality of the animation here. As far as I know, this is the first time ILM has undertaken a feature-length animated film, and it definitely looks like they will be giving Pixar and DreamWorks a run for their money. Rango hits theatres on March 4th, 2011; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.
