Marvel Hires Writers for Doctor Strange Movie

It has been rumoured as a possibility for a while now, but this week we finally have confirmation: Marvel is moving ahead with a live action Doctor Strange movie. It is looking likely to be their next non-Avengers project aside from Runaways, and it will also probably be the first Marvel comic book movie to be released under the Disney name. Deadline New York reports that Marvel has hired writers Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to take a crack at the script.

Donnelly and Oppenheimer have previously written the screenplays for A Sound of Thunder and Sahara, which may sound a bit worrisome, but they probably got this gig based on the strength of more recent work such as the new Conan movie and the big screen adaptation of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Either way, I think it’s safe to assume that this will be a different kind of comic book movie.

Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon turned sorcerer who learns the mystic arts from a healer in the Himalayas. It’s not hard to see why Disney might be interested in a character like this, especially with The Sorcerer’s Apprentice coming out this summer.

Clearly a lot of this movie will depend on the special effects, and it would probably work best under a director who can deliver some surreal visuals. But let’s get to some casting talk… who would you like to see play Doctor Strange? Personally, I think the answer is obvious: Criss Angel: Mindfreak! Seriously, he was already supposed to appear in Jax of Heart, another movie that Donnelly and Oppenheimer wrote. Make it happen Marvel!

However this is the best animated movie marvel has done (easily)…
So I am interested in this project.

I liked the 90’s one with Jeffery Combs. Too bad they lost the rights.
