The Smurfs Movie Trailer

Well, the very first teaser trailer for The Smurfs has hit the web this week, and there really isn’t a heck of a lot to say about it. The amount of footage shown is pretty minimal, and it definitely seems to be taking a page out of the marketing campaign book for the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. The mixing of the classic Smurfs theme with Tone Loc’s “Wild Thing” essentially says all you need to know.

The story has something to do with The Smurfs themselves coming to New York City, and we briefly see a few of them clinging to the top of a taxi cab. The Smurfs features the voices of Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Katy Perry, Anton Yelchin, Alan Cumming, Paul Reubens, B.J. Novak, Jeff Foxworthy and Kenan Thompson, and stars Hank Azaria and Neil Patrick Harris. It hits theatres on July 29th, 2011; check out the teaser trailer after the jump and see what you think.

I don’t see the problem with it.this is a kid’s movie, aimed at kids. It’s not meant to appeal to us. The ONLY reason the original Smurfs cartoon even still does appeal to people like us is solely because of nostalgia and that’s it.

Heaven forbid they make a movie aimed solely at kids, based upon a cartoon aimed solely at kids. Yes, damn them.

  • @SlushieMan Yeah, those kids love their big city adventures. They are clearly just trying to duplicate Alvin and the Chipmunks success, like Sean says. I’m sure their already planning the Smurfquel.

A more traditional take on The Smurfs could appeal to both kids and those of us who are in it for the nostalgia factor. As of now, they’ve lost my business and I’d actually be down for a good Smurfs movie.

  • wow that’s disappointing…characters, blah. is the story not taking place primarily in smurfland?! why not come out of smurfland in the sequel? oh, I know, less time in smurfland less graphics, less money.

I still don’t get why they didn’t just make the whole thing a CG animated film along the same lines as Shrek. Having the Smurf interact in our world doesn’t make any sense and removes the sense of fun and fantasy the cartoon had.

I hate… HATE that they feel they have to modernize everything. Central park? Really? Get smurf’d? Really?

  • Papa smurf doesn’t look old, he just looks like a smurf with a beard and eyebrows.

  • Niklas

    NYC? really? ZZZZzzzzzZZZ

  • Brendan

Since they used adult-leaning phrases liked “about to get Smurf’d” and “Smurf Happens,” I’m surprised they didn’t call the movie “Smurfs and the City” (coulda got Kim Cattrall to voice Smurfette).

I love those little blue bastards, I really do.

  • Gargamel is a trip! if they have Azrael, maybe he could eat all the little rip-off Snorks.
