First Official Photo from Real Steel Starring Hugh Jackman

Production is now underway for the next DreamWorks movie about giant f’n robots: Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman. This is the previously announced family sci-fi drama about robot boxers that Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis are executive producing. It might be something worth getting excited about except for the fact that Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Date Night) is the one directing it. He signed on after Peter Berg dropped out last year, and while Levy is clearly comfortable with big special effects-driven comedies, somehow he doesn’t feel like the right fit here.

The thing that’s pretty cool about the movie, however, is the fact that the robots aren’t 100% CG creations. They have built 19 animatronic giants for use in the film, although apparently they won’t be used for the actual fights, just interactions with the humans. Once again, as they so often do, USA Today managed to score the first look at the movie. Does this image make you more or less interested in the film? Check out a slightly larger version of the pic after the jump.

I smell some serious shallow corny preachiness here..

And how on earth is it possible for a Rocky Robot to have a coach anyways? Wouldn’t it be more realistic if they had a team of scientists behind each robot\?

And are we supposed to relate to a giant Robot?

I hope this goes into other places also and be more close to Spielberg’s “Ai” universe rather than Rocky’s..

    this sounds stupid

this is gonna suck and make a bunch of money

Hope that’s still a concept Robot it looks about as good as the robot guards in “The Black Hole”.

Still I’ll restrain from judgment until there is some more info. Huge Jack Man usually makes the right choices, such as the astounding Van Heilsing.

So… they actually made a movie around Rock Em Sock Em Robots? Just whose idea was it that this was fertile creative ground for a movie?

That screenshot is too stupid to question. It seems to have that fuzzy art deco greenscreen effect to it, like Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow.

is this the first examole of a board game turned film

i mean its Rock Em Sock Em basically isnt it

cant see this pulling in an audience

LOL, it´s fascinating how people can judge a movie from one photo, without any trailer or without even seeing the movie. Or reading the script. And I did read the script and I think people will be VERY suprised that this isn´t Robot Jox or whatever. It is mostly father/son story with some robots in the background.

lol it is Rock Em Sock the movie… the first toy movie has arrived!! Bring on Lego the movie.

i think this sounds dumb based on the plot description…but the picture sort of solidified that thought.
