The Communists Won: Red Dawn Remake Put on Hold?

Well, you can chalk this one up as a victory for the Chinese, even though they had nothing to do with it. As we reported earlier in the week, China was not very happy to find out that their country is being portrayed as the enemy in the film. However, it looks like they won’t have to worry about it anytime soon, as MGM’s upcoming remake of Red Dawn has been put on hold indefinitely. Despite half-joking whispers of a “liberal conspiracy” threatening to keep the movie from hitting theatres, it turns out that the reason for the shutdown is a lot more obvious: MGM simply doesn’t have the money to release it.

The L.A. Times reports that despite the lack of an official announcement, Red Dawn won’t be hitting its proposed November 24th release date after all. This is a result of the on-going financial troubles at MGM, who were also previously forced to put the next Bond movie on hold, as well as The Hobbit (which caused Guillermo Del Toro to leave the project). It’s worth noting, however, that neither of those movies had begun shooting yet, whereas the Red Dawn remake is supposedly already in post-production. At this point, MGM can’t even afford to put out a finished movie unless someone buys the company or makes a major investment.

Hot Tub Time Machine was MGM’s last hope, and it wasn’t quite the massive hit that they had been hoping for. It probably wasn’t realistic to think it might be as big as The Hangover anyway, but perhaps if it had been, Red Dawn would still be on track right now. So there you go… conservatives should have bought more tickets to see Hot Tub Time Machine if they wanted to fight the evil empire and see the commies get their due!

Wasn’t this the last hope MGM had to make any money? Looks like they’re done. Someone needs to buy them soon.

    Grow some balls….

Um…Why is MGM going out of it’s way to hurt everything i love?

Hey MGM, I have a great idea for you guys: Cutthroat Island 2!

MGM has got to be the most oddball studio, I sometimes watch their ‘THIS’ movie channel that airs as the 2nd channel on Philly’s channel 17. The channel mostly has infomercials as advertisers.

Oddly, a story with the same date seems to contradict this. http://www.thewrap.com/movies/column-post/mgm-red-dawn-remake-still-slated-november-18293
