Following up on months of speculation, it looks like The Hurt Locker’s Jeremy Renner is finally about to sign on the dotted line for the role of Hawkeye in The Avengers. Marvel has been courting him for some time now, but he has taken his sweet time deciding (he was also considering a starring role in the Battleship movie at one point, but I think he made the right choice here). By taking on a supporting character, Renner is also leaving himself open for possible involvement in P.T. Anderson’s next film.
However, Hawkeye isn’t the only Marvel casting announcement to hit the presses this week. It appears that they are also in the process of nailing down an actor for the role of Timothy “Dum Dum” Dugan for the Captain America movie as well.
According to Variety, that actor will be Neal McDonough (Minority Report, Desperate Housewives). Dugan is a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. who is known for being an expert marksman and also for wearing a bowler hat. He served with Nick Fury in WWII as part of his Howling Commandos squad, before becoming his second in command at S.H.I.E.L.D.
It’s unclear if Dugan would also appear in The Avengers movie; currently the cast includes Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Nick Fury and War Machine. Ed Norton has not yet signed on, so the involvement of Bruce Banner and The Hulk are still up in the air. At any rate, it looks like Josh Holloway’s casting options are rapidly shrinking! Are you happy with these new casting choices? Do these characters really matter or will they end up being pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things?
