Brett Ratner to Produce Edgy Live Action Remake of Snow White

Leave it to Brett Ratner to pounce on the latest trend and make it sound as lame as possible. As we all know, live action fairy tales are a big thing in Hollywood right now thanks to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and we’ve previously heard about dueling Wizard of Oz reinventions being developed, along with Disney’s Sleeping Beauty remake. Now Bernie Goldmann, Ryan Kavanaugh and Brett Ratner have thrown their hat in the ring by acquiring a pitch called The Brothers Grimm: Snow White from writer Melisa Wallack. It is described as “an edgy 3D re-imagining of the German folk tale.” Nice.
Wallack previously wrote and directed the Aaron Eckhart comedy Meet Bill, although it’s unclear if she’ll direct this movie as well. The good news is, so far Brett Ratner hasn’t been mentioned as the director either. Here’s what The Rat had to say about the project:
“This is not your grandfather’s Snow White. Melisa went back to the 500 year old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney’s film. His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale. Walt made one of the great movies of all time, but ours is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we’re going to do.”
So edgy, but with more comedy? Like an R-rated version of Enchanted? I’m not quite getting it. I’m just wondering how Ratner will work in a scene where the characters are playing Guitar Hero. At this point, I think a more important question to ask is, what’s going on with that Fables TV series?
