Just got done watching this, incredible transfer really amazing...to see the un-restored trailer against the restored film, on blue-ray, is so cool. Anyone that has trouble watching these great old classics due to wear and tear - BLUE RAY IS YOUR NEW GOSPEL.

I had forgotten all the banking references (great depression era) that was fun.

The interview is also great as all Ford fans know about his disregard for introspection. The interviewer is a Brit that is il equipt for a man of Ford's experience and world knowledge, but you can tell the very old Ford is more willing to talk than in any of his other on-camera stuff. He really "suffers the fools" doing the interview.

Yesterday, I read the April/May 2004, Issue #11 "Metal Hurlant" comic book, and it had an editorial in which, coincidentally, the following was written:

"There's also a new selection with two wonderful John Ford films, STAGECOACH (a movie that Orson Welles watched fifty times to learn to edit. Orson Welles is a great liar, who said elsewhere that it was best not to watch movies before making them, but he also watched THE GRAPES OF WRATH, from which he took the idea to use sets with a roof and also the director of photography that you'll find in CITIZEN KANE)."

I'm not writing this comment to dispute Jay's facts. It's just another version of history.

(BTW, the aforementioned comic book has stories written by film writer/director Alejandro Jodorowsky. Weird.)

I'd definitely say that "Rio Bravo" and "The Searchers" are my favorites. Surprised to report, that I've yet to see "Stagecoach," but now it's at the top of my list. Excellent review, sir!

Jay

Based on your quick review on the podcast I went out and bought it last weekend and watched it this past Sunday. It blew me away... It is amazing how real stunts play compared to a cg effect stunts. Knowing someone did a stunt for real changes the weight in the risks of it and how much I invest in it. This weekend is "Walkabout" again based on your note on the podcast. I also picked up the The Seventh Seal

I do not have all of the Criterion released on BluRay but most of the ones you have suggested I have gotten. I would like to see your idea of the Criterion movies you have seen rated in order. Or at least tag them so we could filter them on the site, but maybe you are limited on how many tags show up on the top.

Thanks for the review... I look foward to the next "C review"

I fucking love this film. Here is something I wrote back when i first saw this in the beginning of school:

Enter the first talkie. Apparently this was the first collaboration between John Ford and John Wayne, as well as John Fords first movie shot in monumental valley. I have to say that even though I have not seen John Wayne in alot of movies, the only other would be She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, he is an awesome person to watch on screen. He is the kind of person that some people could attack for not being a very accomplished actor, but it doesn't matter. He can literally just be on screen and say the words and not do anything, and it's convincing and entertaining, because he has screen presence. He doesn't have to emote, to convey emotion. He commands the screen, and John Ford makes it easy for him. Check out the first shot in this movie featuring John Wayne for one of the coolest introduction shots I have ever seen. The movie wasn't completely resolved for me, but there's no denying it's entertainment value, and when the indians charge and the cavalry finally arrives I was totally pumped up. Fantastic stunt work as well.
