I was a big fan of Babel, but I do think the sum of its parts is lesser than the parts themselves. And that's probably the fault of the writing, trying to reach for some sort of connection that should never have been literal, so I have high hopes for this. But that being said, I thought The Burning Plain was awesome too, so I think I'm siding with both camps on this. Arriaga definitely started strong, it is interesting if Inarritu can do the same. If that happens, we might get twice the amount of great movies as we would have gotten if they had stayed together!
