Is Marvel Also Planning a S.H.I.E.L.D. Movie?

This may come as a surprise to some of you (or maybe it won’t), but apparently Marvel wants to turn Nick Fury into something more than just an eye-patch pun-providing supporting character in their series of interconnected comic book movies. They are also considering giving him his very own solo film revolving around S.H.I.E.L.D, the covert organization that he works for. In a recent interview on Radio Big Boy, Samuel L. Jackson revealed that he is going to star in a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie that will likely head into production sometime after The Avengers hits theatres.

While it’s unclear how solid these plans are, and if he was just throwing out the possibility as a way to further his own career, there is already some evidence to support his claim. When Jackson signed a contract to continue playing Fury last February, it was part of a nine-picture deal that did indeed make mention of a potential S.H.I.E.L.D spin-off. Personally, I’m not completely sold on the character carrying his own film, but I suppose this could be another one of those mid-range budget movies that Marvel has been talking about. Then again, we don’t want a repeat of the last Nick Fury movie, do we?

I could get excited about an epic surrounding the whole marvel universe. Something like Civil war where all of the heroes are at odds with each other could be really cool. or a complete mess too.

I think SHIELD would work better set in the ’60’s like the original comics. If this purported SHIELD movie is set in modern times it might come off as too much of a GI Joe clone because essentially SHIELD was GI Joe in the ’60’s. Also I’m not sure if I like the notion that the Avengers is strictly a SHIELD-backed initiative because that’s not how it was in the comics. They did work with SHIELD and they were usually aligned in terms of their goals but they were not controlled by SHIELD. Not sure what a solo Fury/SHIELD movie would accomplish as it seems like it might duplicate the Avengers.

Only if Kurt Russell or George Clooney are Nick Fury.

I don’t get it. Isn’t SHIELD and AVENGERS the same thing?

@omfg: SHEILD and Avengers are different in the comics. The movies may have confused the issue by having SHIELD recruiting the Avengers team, but they’re still different.
The Avengers is a team comprised of super-heroes, while SHIELD is more of a covert government spy type agency. There is some crossover between the two.
As far as the news, I thought the Nick Fury/SHIELD movie was the plan all along. I guess it wasn’t as definite as I thought, maybe some of that had to do with getting Samuel L. Jackson back on board for all the crossover movies.
