Pixels Short Film To Be Turned Into Feature for Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison

After the success of Carl Erik Rinsch’s The Gift and Federico Alvarez’ Panic Attack!, another short film appears to have caught the eye of Hollywood execs over the past couple of weeks. Patrick Jean’s viral hit Pixels depicts a series of 8-bit video game characters invading New York City, and it attracted enough attention to land the French filmmaker a Hollywood agent. From there, the short film found its way to Adam Sandler and his production company Happy Madison.
According to Heat Vision, Happy Madison is currently in talks with Columbia Pictures to turn the concept into a feature film. The plan is to make it a “Ghostbusters-style action comedy in which characters come out of a video game to wreak havoc in the real world.” While that all sounds well and good, something tells me they won’t be able to use a lot of the characters without getting a bunch of video game companies on board as well. Also, as much as I loved Pixels, I think it showcases even less directorial talent and storytelling ability than some of the other shorts that have been recently optioned. This Hollywood obsession with cashing in on viral videos is almost getting as bad as all the board game movies. What do you think, could Pixels actually make a decent feature film, or are studio execs too easily wowed by special effects? Check out the original short after the jump.
