Spartacus: Blood and Sand to Get Six Episode Prequel

Starz has announced that they will be starting production this summer on a six-episode prequel to their hit series Spartacus: Blood and Sand to air sometime in January. The story is expected to revolve around Batiatus (John Hannah) and his wife Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) and their rise to power. The prequel is intended to fill in the gap while production on the show’s second season is delayed due to star Andy Whitfield’s treatment for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in New Zealand. Whitfield is expected to make a brief appearance in the prequel as well.

It seems like a smart move for Starz, considering that Spartacus has been setting ratings records for the network up to this point (the season finale averaged just over 1.2 million viewers). I guess it’s not a big surprise that violence and sex sell, but after watching part of the pilot I could not get past the relentlessly over-the-top 300-style action scenes. Have you been watching Spartacus: Blood and Sand, and will a prequel be enough to keep you interested?

Try and make it through the pilot, Sean. It took me 3 tries but it was worth it. I really got on board towards the end of episode 2. They tone down the gore just a tiny bit (or at least make it look more realistic) and the characters actually gain some depth to them.

Season one was a fun little diversion that both the wife and I enjoyed. Looking forward to season 2 eventually.

The white guy is missing a nipple.

I agree with AJ.. I thought the first episode was awful but decided to stick with it and the show got better and better for each episode. I’m really looking forward to season 2 now.

My husband and I watched all 13 episodes together. We loved the blood, plot, action, nudity, etc… We are excited to learn of the prequel episodes as we await season 2.

I really enjoyed season 1. Outside of the over the top action scenes and an abundance of nudity, it was well written and acted. I’m looking forward to the prequel and season 2.

The first episode was a little sketchy, but between the gratutious nudity in the stands at the arena, naked women with gold body paint, and all the violence made it one helluva show!

I felt like I really didn’t like the show until episode three, but felt the potential from the beginning and am so glad I stuck it out. It was a great show, even if there were never any more of it, it can stand alone as a fantastic 13part miniseries! :)
