Marvel Planning Cheaper Comic Book Movies for Lesser Known Characters?

I remember back before Iron Man came out a couple of years ago, a lot of people had serious doubts about how well a movie based on a “second string” superhero might do. Iron Man didn’t have quite the same name recognition as Spider-Man or Batman, and there were predictions that such a movie might not appeal to anyone outside of the hardcore comic book fans. Well, clearly they were dead wrong, as the movie was a massive hit and encouraged Marvel to pursue their ultimate goal of putting together The Avengers on screen. But after The Avengers… what comes next?

CHUD has an interesting report this week that would seem to indicate that Marvel is aware that they probably can’t hope to top The Avengers. Instead, they are looking to start downsizing their future films, by giving lesser known characters a chance to star in their own smaller films. They have been holding meetings with writers and directors about such properties as Dr. Strange, Ka-Zar, Luke Cage, Dazzler and Power Pack, with proposed budgets of $20 to $40 million. It seems like a pretty smart move, although once again it raises the question of how much interest there is in some of these characters, even with a smaller budget. Will we eventually get to the point where they’re doing direct-to-DVD films about the worst characters in the Marvel universe? Would anyone pay to see that? I’m sure at least a few people out there would. What do you think, is this a good idea? What smaller Marvel characters do you think could support their own film?

Does this mean we finally get the Stilt-Man movie? Hooray!!

  • I actually think a Luke Cage/Iron Fist movie could work in some level. Maybe a Daredevil reboot (what’s the state on that, BTW?). A Dr. Strange movie would be REALLY cool.

i’m one of the people that does not know anything about lesser known comic book characters, but they can get me into theaters to watch these movies by giving them to interesting directors/actors to do. That alone would get me into the theater.

This seems like a perfect time to give lesser known, hopefully interesting directors a chance with something.

Why not, it worked great for the Punisher…well, at least the second Punisher movie…er, I mean, the third Punisher movie…hmmm…

    The problem, IMO, is this:
Pretty much only comic book fans want to see a Doctor Strange (for example)movie, however, if said movie lacks quality, even the fans, who they are counting on seeing it, will turn against it, leaving an audience of none.

Now, if they think outside the box and get quality direction/acting, even from lesser knowns, then they might have something.

Perhaps with lesser known properties there’s less pressure to stay faithful to the original material so that you might get an interesting interpretation that strays from the source material but actually improves upon it. You wouldn’t see this from the high profile properties because of the hue and cry from fans.

Its a good idea. The audience who have no idea who these characters are will still go see the movies if the trailers look good.

  • You think the average person will go see a movie called Dazzler?

I guess maybe if her costume is hot enough.

@Sean: Also, you gotta figure a Dazzler movie would be a good vehicle for an existing pop singer looking to get a lead role (for those of you who don’t know, Dazzler was a mutant that was also a famous pop star). That would bring in a lot of female fans, as well as the guys who like superhero films and hot chicks.

I’m down for a Dr. Strange movie!

I want someone to take another whack at Man Thing. I heard the film that was made a couple of years ago was shit but the character has allot of potential.

  • Darksiders

What about Daredevil? They ruined the first one but he has some pretty good and dark storylines.

  • Isn’t Ant-Man and Wasp dumb enough as it is?

  • Zoo

I wonder who will be cast as Squirrel Girl? I think Colleen Haskel from The Animal and the first season of Survivor is a dead ringer.
