Friday the 13th Sequel No Longer Happening?

With the Platinum Dunes remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street due to hit theatres next weekend, you’d think we might have an official announcement or even a teaser trailer for their next project by now. That project was supposed to be Friday the 13th: Part 2, but this week on Twitter producer Brad Fuller revealed the shocking news that a Friday the 13th sequel may not be happening anymore. In response to a fan query about said sequel, Fuller responded simply, “it is dead- not happening.” The good folks at Bloody Disgusting followed up with Fuller and received this additional info: “Right now there is no movement on Friday 13th: Part 2.”

It’s surprising news, considering that Marcus Nispel’s Friday the 13th made $91 million worldwide. Granted, the vast majority of that money was made on its opening weekend, after which the movie plummeted off the box office charts at an alarming rate. Still, you’d think that Jason Voorhees has returned for so many sequels in the past that at least one or two more should still remain profitable. Heck, Rob Zombie’s Halloween didn’t make as much money as Friday the 13th, but it still earned a sequel with another one supposedly in the works. Is Platinum Dunes foolish to give up on the franchise already, or have people somehow already lost interest in seeing another Friday the 13th flick? Will A Nightmare on Elm Street fare any better?

it’s dead right now, doesn’t mean it always will be

  • I wasn’t too fond of the remake, but I think that they could have (maybe) advanced the story in interesting ways. There needs to be a new Jason “story”.

I’m thinking A Nightmare on Elm Street will top that 91 million mark.

Maybe it was just me, but it was always my preferred cheesy horror franchise back in the day. Halloween and Friday the 13th were always a half step behind old pizza face.

I’m actually disappointed about this. I hope they get it back on track because I think that the remake was a good start to reinvigorate the franchise and the talk about what they were planning for the sequel was promising.

  • I don’t mind the remakes, but the way Platinum Dunes went about F13th left something to be desired…

I would like to see a sequel, though.

I hated the remake. So bad. It’s this constant need to have insanely beautiful people in the lead that rubs me the. Plus most of them are horrible actors and the script was shit.

It was a botched remake and a wasted opportunity. A sequal would only be another waste of 90 minutes of my life that I’ll never ever get back. Seeing a bunch of pretty prepies and black dude crying “slave” die doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t have to love the soon to be slaughtered charactors but, it would be nice if I were able to at least care if they live or most likely die. Not to mention the boob shots weren’t even worth price of admition.
