Mark Hamill to Direct The Black Pearl?

Looks like Luke Skywalker himself may be setting his sights on getting behind the camera again, if his recent comments at the Los Angeles Comedy Shorts Festival are to be believed. Mark Hamill recently took part in a panel entitled “Famous People Talkin’ About Sh*t”, where he revealed that he is working on an upcoming project that he is not allowed to announce until Cannes. He hinted that it would be based on a comic book that he wrote, and that “at first glance it’s a drama, but it has dark humor.” He seems to be referring to The Black Pearl (no relation to Pirates of the Caribbean), a five-part mini-series that he wrote about a man who becomes a costumed vigilante after he prevents a crime and the media turns him into a hero.

Hamill is best known nowadays as a voice actor (many believe his take on The Joker to be one of the best ever), but he did direct one other movie in 2004 called Comic Book: The Movie, a mockumentary about a comic book collector who is hired as an advisor for a movie adaptation of the fictional hero Commander Courage. It was filmed at the San Diego Comic Con and features many cameos including Hugh Hefner, Stan Lee, Bruce Campbell and Kevin Smith. The Black Pearl was co-written by Eric Johnson, who Hamill notes has also recently written David O. Russell’s The Fighter for Paramount. Has anyone out there read the comic, and do you think Mark Hamill could have a career ahead of him as a director?
