Monday Morning Box Office Report: Dragon Slays Kick-Ass

After all the hype and the hoopla, Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass didn’t quite live up to expectations over the weekend, losing out to How to Train Your Dragon at the box office and coming in well below its projected numbers. It was a difficult film to market to the general public, and once again proves the fact that what seems huge on the internet is not necessarily what’s popular in the real world. Either way, the movie didn’t flat out bomb; it earned just under $20 million, which is about $10 million off the mark from what Lionsgate was hoping for (who, incidentally, paid $50 mil for the flick). The good news is that How to Train Your Dragon seems to be benefiting from some strong word of mouth, jumping back to #1 in its fourth week, and it’s nice to see a movie on top that deserves it. Date Night was the #3 movie over the weekend and Death at a Funeral ended up at #4, followed by Clash of the Titans.
