Film Junk Poll: What is the Best Post-Jaws Underwater Horror Movie?

pollpostjaws

I’m already anticipating a lot of angry comments over this one, but let’s try to focus on the discussion just as much as the poll. I’ve always thought that water-based horror movies are pretty awesome, and with the recent announcement of Shark Night 3D and Dark Falls, I started thinking about what memorable underwater horror flicks we’ve had over the past few decades. Even though a lot of them aren’t great, I think most genre fans have a soft spot for them anyway. Clearly Jaws inspired many of these, and clearly it would win any sort of poll hands down, so I decided to focus on movies that came after Jaws (not including the sequels). Cast your vote for one of these ten flicks, and then hit up the comments to list off all the other cool horror movies you can think of that take place in or around water.

  • I’ve yet to watch Leviathon, but it’s recorded on my DVR I just need to get around to watching it. I remember watching it as a young boy and enjoying it but I don’t remember the movie very well.
I went with Deep Blue Sea because it’s a guilty pleasure and although it can be a little cheesy at times, the overall sharks look pretty good and realistic. I also like how the movie starts off showing just how big these bastards are, so you know exactly what is coming for the actors.

Why would there be angry comments over this?

Voted for Deep Rising, because I enjoyed that one. I hated Deep Blue Sea.

  • Joe G

    What about the abyss?

  • Thought about The Abyss but wasn’t really sure if it qualified as horror.

I am expecting angry comments because I’m sure there are lots of movies I left out (like The Abyss).

    Piranaha is my guilty pleasure.

Joe Dante’s best movie in my book. The best part is they have a jaws acarde game in the begining of the movie – They basicly tell you – yep we ripped off the Jaws.

  • Kurt

Lucio Fulci’s ZOMBI2, the Zombie Vs. Shark Scene is about as awesome as it gets.

  • Piranha is my pleasure. Nothing guilty about it.

Its probably between Deep Rising and Deep Blue Sea, they’re both really fun B movies. I give it to Deep Blue Sea just for the Samuel Jackson death scene.

Leviathan isn’t very good, but its got Peter Weller and Colonel Trautman in it, so its still pretty watchable
(although its a huge Thing ripoff).

I also have a soft spot for Sphere, but I don’t think it really qualifies as horror, its more of a sci-fi movie like The Abyss.

  • AdamH

I grew up with Deep Star Six and Leviathan on the same VHS tape and used to watch them back to back all the time! Both are my favourites! :P Alas i went with Leviathan

  • I’m with Joe G. I would cheat The Abyss in there, just to see it blow all of the others out of the water…

    pun intended.

It may not even be a cheat, as it’s got many horror elements in it.

DeepStarSix got my vote but I love Enzo G. Castellari’s Great White.

  • Primal

You see Sean, people aren’t comprehending. Just generalize this shit and take the horror out and then we could add a movie like The Abyss and Zombi2. If we add through Kurt’s definition of underwater horror, then lets add Little Children too, hehe.

  • What, no Orca? Dammit Sean.

  • Steve

Came in expecting The Abyss, but I think all those movies are trashy to some degree (though not necessarily unentertaining), so went with Pirahna 2.

  • I love the “Jaws” scene in LIttle Children, so yea, what Primal said!
