Bill Condon in Talks to Direct Twilight: Breaking Dawn

Well they didn’t get Sofia Coppola, Gus Van Sant, or even M. Night Shyamalan, but it looks like Summit Entertainment have managed to snag the other director on their wish list for the final Twilight film, Breaking Dawn. According to Variety, Bill Condon is currently in talks to helm two movies based on the fourth book. The series has featured a revolving door of directors, including Catherine Hardwicke, Chris Weitz, and David Slade. It remains to be seen if this was Summit’s preference, or if it was the filmmakers who chose not to commit to more than one film, but I suspect the former.
Condon seems like a bit of an odd choice to direct Breaking Dawn, especially since he is best known for directing Kinsey and Dreamgirls and writing the screenplay for Chicago. He definitely seems to make movies aimed at a much older audience than Twilight. It’s interesting to note, however, that he does have at least one horror movie under his belt: he directed Candyman 2: Farewell to the Flesh back in 1995. It almost seems like Summit is hoping to get something Oscar-worthy out of the franchise by hiring Condon, but I really don’t think that’s a serious possibility. Will fans even notice the mark of a different director on these films? Probably not. The third film, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, hits theatres on June 30th.
