Any comedy that stars Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis and Jemaine Clement should make for guaranteed laughs, but surprisingly the first trailer for the upcoming movie Dinner for Schmucks left me feeling a little bit underwhelmed. It’s quite possible that the trailer actually left out some of the best parts (which doesn’t happen too often), but I suppose I’ll just have to wait for the inevitable red band trailer to find out. Either way, the concept is definitely a great one. This is a remake of the 1998 French film The Dinner Game, where a business man’s boss holds an annual dinner party and asks all of his employees to bring the biggest random idiot as a guest for everyone to laugh at.
Steve Carell plays Barry, an eccentric and dim-witted man that Paul Rudd accidentally runs into one day, earning him an invitation to the party. The movie is directed by Jay Roach (Meet the Parents, Austin Powers), and has a huge list of contributing writers, which could either be a good thing or a bad thing. What do you think, does this have what it takes to be the new Dumb & Dumber? Dinner for Schmucks hits theatres on July 23rd; check out the trailer after the jump or watch it in HD over at Apple.com.
