Film Junk Poll: What is the Best John Cusack Movie?

pollcusack

The release of Hot Tub Time Machine seems like as good an excuse as any to revisit the past films of John Cusack and evaluate his best work to date. He burst onto the scene in the mid-’80s as a teen idol of sorts, starring in such films as Sixteen Candles, Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer. He continued on into the ’90s with a string of hits, before eventually losing his way a little bit and getting caught up in a fair amount of mediocre fluff. As of late he seems to be re-establishing his name somewhat, although it’s hard to shake the feeling that his best days are behind him. What do you think is the best John Cusack movie? Cast your vote in this week’s poll and then sound off in the comments below.

Better Off Dead for the win. By far his funniest film. One Crazy Summer also has some good moments, and it has Godzilla in it as well.

Second. It set the stage for One Crazy Summer, A Sure Thing, Hot Pursuit and Say Anything, Tape Heads, Grose Pointe, and High Fidelity. As far as I’m concerned that’s the same character we first see in BoD.

Man, this is an impossible question. Like asking which kid to save in a fire. I went with the sentimental choice and picked High Fidelity, as I used to work in a indie record store just like that.

  • I think the only film on here that I have any memory of seeing is Con Air! Wow

  • HFD

I saw Being John Malcovich on the list and figured that would be the popular vote, but went with High Fidelity, which I thought was mostly an unknown gem. Lo and behold, that’s the top pick atm. Just goes to show the great taste of Filmjunk readers.

I’m with Swarez, Better Off Dead!

  • Kurt

Anyone who gets a kick out of BETTER OFF DEAD should find TAPEHEADS, which is sort of a slightly wackier version, and it has Tim Robbins to boot.

It is widely available on DVD and worth a look, particularly becuase it has a whos who of video artists (DEVO, Jello Biafra, “Weird Al” Yankovic, etc.)

High Fidelity. Hands down. Best movie period, as far as I’m concerned. I’ve seen all but about five of his movies and it still reigns the most re-watchable. Grosse Pointe Blank and Better Off Dead are both close seconds.

  • Colin

High Fidelity and Gross Pointe Blank are the only legitimate contenders.

I would also accept One Crazy Summer, but apparently FJ prefers Bullets Over Broadway…

  • don’t knock Bullets Over Broadway tell you see it – a different Woody…

Better off Dead without a doubt. How can you top, “Go that way really fast. If something gets in your way, turn.”? Grosse Pointe is definitely second.
