  • I grabbed this as I got up this morning and listened to the first half on my way in, was really excited to see you had reviewed Mother. I totally agree with Sean, it is an amazing movie (and I’m sure that will prompt you into watching the equally brilliant Memories of Murder)

Few things I’ve noted with Korean movies after having watched a whole load of them recently. There is nearly always a character who is either ‘slow’ or ‘stupid’ to provide comic relief and the cops are always portrayed as bumbling idiots. One other thing I noted, and I guess this is cultural, if you ‘wrong’ somebody it appears that you are required to make financial restitution, without any kind of court hearing (though I’m sure someone from Korea can help us out here?)

If anyone is interested, I was asked by a friend to do a favourite Korean movie list (seriously I am no expert on this subject, and would love some more ideas of what to watch), you can see it on his blog here http://ultimatereviews.co.uk/?p=991

If you like Mother, then apart from the obvious watch of Memories of Murder, then The Chaser (which is fantastic) and Public Enemy are worth finding too.

  • I love how you guys make fun of your sponsors :D It so embodies the Film Junk spirit.

  • I also love how when Jay isn’t involved reviews for foreign films are about 9 minutes long ;)

RE: the junkmail about films with titles that put people off seeing them…how about “Rodger Dodger”? Great film, but I think the title made people think it was some sort of teen sex comedy, like a lesser American Pie or something, especially coming out when it did.

    Pokemon! Silly Asians.

I loved Mother and completely agree with Shaun. Hopefully Jay will see it soon so we can hear his comments. I guess I’ll go stalk him on Twitter until then.

  • Paul, I checked out your Korean movie list, and added a comment. I recommend that others should check out your list.

  • You said Daily “Bugle.” I think you meant “Planet.” Just keeping it real for the geeks out there.

  • Paul Field

thanks Reed, but couldn’t see any comment there? Perhaps you could post it here instead?

  • fatbologna

I feel like last year’s Breathless(Ddongpari http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1373120/) isn’t getting the love in North America that it should. That was an amazingly raw film that blew me away. I liked Mother a lot but I absolutely LOVED Breathless.

  • Mason

The Richard Donner cut did include the diner scenes from the original. I saw it fairly recently.

  • Hmm… Paul, I guess my comment is still being moderated over at Ultimate Reviews, or maybe my profanity got the comment discarded. :-)

Um, I think I just said that I’ve seen six of your ten listed films, and that I enjoyed all six. So I look forward to seeing the other four.

I was also wondering if you had seen a Korean film from 2001 called “Musa” aka “The Warrior” which starred Ziyi Zhang. I really enjoyed that film.

Quentin Tarantino has three Korean films in his top 20 since 1992. The one he had that you didn’t have on your list is another Park Chan-wook film, “J.S.A.: Joint Security Area.” I still have to check out this film.

  • Thanks Reed, I have not seen ‘Musa’ but have now added it to my lovefilm rental list (UK netflix). I have also added ‘Breathless’ so thanks to @fatbologna

As for JSA, this was recently re-released in the UK in a double pack with Park Chan-wook’s I’m A Cyborg (but that’s okay). The problem I had with it, was it was very confusing, so this is in a pile of stuff I have to rewatch.

Out of interest, what are the 4 you havent seen, I dont know anyone else who has seen Welcome to Dongmakol or The Chaser, so curious to see other opinions.

  • Fatbologna

I’ve actually seen the Chaser. It’s pretty good. Tense and thrilling and the fact that the main character is a soft-hearted pimp added some charm. I though it was a tad too long and the end was sort of unnecessarily depressing but good overall. I’ve also see Musa which was decent as well. Not really mt cup of tea as I think I’m burned out on the epic fight-fests but it was fairly visually interesting. I’m more interested in the human drama and thrillers from Korea than the more typical epics.

  • I agree with Greg about all upcoming blockbusters coming out in 3-D. I think it’s really stupid. Sadly, I don’t have a drive-in for that, so I guess I’ll stick with a regular theater. Anyway, nice podcast guys. Keep it up.

  • KeithTalent

Definitely annoyed by all of this 3D bullshit. Ebert tweeted “3-D prices going up as much as 25%”. If that’s true it’s just one more reason to be irritated by this stupid fad.

  • Paul, I have not seen “The Chaser,” “Memories of Murder,” “Mother,” “Welcome to Dongmakgol,” and “Tazza The High Rollers.” Sorry, that’s five I haven’t seen. I’ve been reading so many good things about “Mother” that I guess I imagined I had seen it already. :-)

  • Falsk

Just got into going to my local drive-in because of you guys and I had the same reaction Greg did with the 3D announcement–I’ll just go there all summer. Fuck 3D. But could that be the final nail in the drive-in coffin? Could the urge for 3D and the lack of it at the drive-ins be what finally put them out of business? I would be totally devastated if that was the case.

Also, I’m so fucking tired of the term ‘spank bank’, lmao. I hear it way too often.

  • Reed: Mother is too ordinary for you.

Falsk: It’s possible that 3-D could kill drive-ins, but when you think about it, if the multiplex didn’t already kill them, hopefully this won’t either.

  • Falsk

Hm. That’s true. I guess I’m just terrified of losing the last drive-in in Jersey. What a sad day that would be.

  • projectgenesis

Thanks for answering my Junk Mail guys and my friends and I use “Spank Bank” quite often. I just thought it was a mid-west thing.

  • re spank bank, in the UK it’s referred to as ‘wank bank’

  • MY SPANK BANK:

    Blame it on Rio
    My Tutor
    Mischief
    Fast Times at Ridgemont High
The Thorn Birds, yeah, I said it…
