Sony Planning CG Popeye Movie in 3-D

Popeye The Sailor Man is set to make his triumphant return to the big screen with the help of former Marvel Studios head honcho Avi Arad and the folks at Sony Pictures ImageWorks (Open Season). The project is being developed as a fully CG-animated 3-D tentpole project to accompany The Smurfs, which is also in development at Sony. Former Variety writer Mike Jones will pen the script, after making a name for himself with an original screenplay called The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break.

“I’m an unabashed, lifelong Popeye fan… Introducing this squinty-eyed sailor to a new generation also means reintroducing him to those who, like me, grew up with him.”

Popeye’s last big screen outing was the 1980 live action film directed by Robert Altman and starring Robin Williams. No word yet on who will voice the characters this time around, but we can expect Olive Oyl, Bluto and Swee’Pea to all make appearances. Here’s to hoping Green Day sings the theme song for the soundtrack.

ALL us Popeye fans demand they get Billy West to do the POPEYE voice. He was exactly like long time legend Jack Mercer’s voice, and anyone else will ruen the role!

  • Mike Roberts

We agree fully. Billy West was fantastic as Popeye’s voice and no one could do it better today with the passing of Jack Mercer (his voice from the 30’s to when he passed in the early 80’s). ONLY Billy West get Sony!

  • Kim Crawford

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Billy West MUST be hired to do Popeye! If not many will not go. NO one compares to Billy’s Popeye voice, only original Jack Mercer. Get Billy on track for POPEYE. Also have him scatting more when he walks.

We ALL want Billy West to do Popeyes voice. This Tom Kenny STINKS!!!!!!!! Going to be a flop without Billy! Also Popeye looks horible!
