Hollywood Remake #230243543299434: The Monster Squad

monstersquadremake

The Monster Squad, a kid’s film from the 1980s that has achieved cult status over the years (and finally got a release on DVD a couple of years ago), is on the docket to be remade, adding to the ever growing list of Hollywood remakes (and I feel like its the 500th I’ve heard about in the past month). Rob Cohen is looking to direct the film for Paramount, and has called on his producing buddies Michael Bay (…ugh), Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form to give him a hand.

Cohen helped produce the original, so at least there is some sort of connection, but the fun of The Monster Squad is how cheesy it is, and I doubt it would retain that in its remade, probably heavily CGI-ed version. First Fright Night, now this…it’s like Hollywood has decided to remake all the fun horror/comedy films from my youth.

I just hope they don’t tame down the dialogue for the remake. The original captured, fairly accurately, the often mean spirited nature of juvenile chatter.

The Monster Squad is not cheesy at all. It’s in fact a fairly intelligent kids adventure film that doesn’t talk down to its audience and is completely aware of its material.

  • No. No. No. No. No. No. NO!

And guess what, the original will not be harmed in any way during the filming of this remake. So, everyone just get your panties untwisted.
