Jay’s Year Of Movie Watching

Paris, Texas

So last year I joined Twitter and desperately struggled to figure out a good use for it. Assuming most people following my account might come from the Film Junk podcast, I thought it might be an idea platform to keep track of what films I’ve been watching and what ratings I give them. My first post was March 9th, 2009 with David Cronenberg’s The Brood (3.5/4) and since then I’ve managed to check out a good number of great films over the last year. (Jacques Tati’s Play Time and Wim Wender’s Paris, Texas are definitely two stand outs on this list.) Many of these are first time viewings, but a there are also a lot of movies I just felt the urge to revisit. So what do you think? Any favourites? Have a look for yourself after the jump!

  • Lots of great relatively obscure films in here… Bookmarked it for later reference.

  • Bob Bobson

Did you watch the Director’s Cut of Watchmen? I thought it made a world of difference…

That said, good list! I also wrote down a few titles.

Keep up the good work! Looking forward to Beauty Day!

  • Glendon

Nice list Jay. What did you think of Godard’s Contempt? I hope you get to see Che Part 2, I think it’s much more satisfying than the first half.

Also, can I add my year of films list to the fray? I started getting lots of dvds on loan for free from the Ottawa library (who apparently have every Criterion dvd, not that every release they put out is amazing, but it saves me money)and kept a list of all the movies I watched. Bored, I turned it into a facebook gallery. Hopefully the link below works.

    http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=179059&id=505393153&l=8cf707518f

A lot of the year was me finally getting to see some classics for the first time like Casablanca and the films of Billy Wilder. Some of them I watched after recommendations from film junk, such as Pontypool, Manda Bala, Bon Cop Bad Cop and Helvetica.

Feel free to mock me for not fully getting Gates Of Heaven.

  • boopadoop

Be sure to watch A Single Man!! I’m interested to read what you’d think about it. I personally loved it. Great list by the way.

  • Mrespony

Your best recommendation of the year for me was Pontypool, none of my friends had heard of it and I discovered it through your review/discussions on Film Junk. If you and the rest of the FJ crew can add just one film to my all-time favorites list per year (that I wouldn’t have found otherwise) then you’re doing one hell of a great thing. Thanks!

  • Excellent list. If you’re taking recommendations, you might also want to watch Ex-Drummer and Taxidermia. I think you would really enjoy them, especially since you seem to enjoy movies which are a little difficult for most people to stomach. They come out on NTSC DVD next month.

  • Ah, thank you for giving props to “The Brood!” I just saw it last year for the first time and I L.O.V.E. it. There is just something about the look and feel of it which still sticks with me.

Why did you give “La Jetee” a 2.5? Just curious. Is that a “love it or hate it” film, do you think? I’ve seen it a bunch of times and I adore it, but I can appreciate that it’s a little odd for some people.

  • Jesus Christ! that is a lot of film…have you ever figured out how many days you spent watching films? I see roughly 260 films at average 96 minutes that’s 17.3333 days! I need to get to the video store!

  • pimpleorangejuice

    jay, uhum, you suck.

  • Napalm

Good lord man! That’s a lot of movies! I’m bookmarking the page as well for future reference!

  • Bob Bobson: I did re-watch the director’s cut, but not the one with the comic book footage added in.

Less Lee Moore: I didn’t hate La Jetee but I just felt it was a little too, for the lack of a better term, artsy-fartsy for my taste. This sort of thing usually makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Either way, it’s still an interesting piece of filmmaking.

  • was an inside job

    Dusan Makavejev ?

  • xego

could you include the IMDB links next time?

    Just kidding…

  • patrik

still don´t get why you dislike Sherlock Holmes so much. otherwise it´s a solid list

  • John

Is there any reason to the paragraphs or are they just random? Can’t figure one. But nice list with suggestions.

  • Canadian Mcdonalds

wouldnt Gene Hackman play a good werner herzog, at least his character in crimson

  • Mark

I’m just trying to figure out how you gave Monsters vs. Aliens a (1), while G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra got (2) and got a Kung Fu Panda (3) — considering how closely your ratings match mine (of those I’ve seen on the list). Was it story? voice-acting?

I liked Kung Fu Panda, but just liked Monsters vs. Aliens more. (Who knows? Maybe because it was the first movie I saw in Real3D.) It’s the G.I. Joe, I think, that confounds me.
