Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians Trailer

USA Today premiered the first photos from Zack Snyder’s next movie Legend of the Guardians yesterday (previously known as Guardians of Ga’Hoole), and now Yahoo! has the first trailer. As it turns out, Guardians is a fully CG-animated film about… uh… a bunch of mystical owls or something. Snyder admits that after doing a bunch of hard-R movies, he wanted to finally do something his kids could enjoy. Something tells me that fans of 300 and Watchmen might not be as excited about this project.

Still, apparently there is a pre-existing fan base since the movie is based on the best-selling series of young adult books written by Kathryn Lasky. The voice cast includes Hugo Weaving, Geoffrey Rush, Helen Mirren, Emilie de Ravin, Abbie Cornish, Jim Sturgess and Sam Neill, and the animation is being handled by Animal Logic, the same folks who did Happy Feet. Oh, and it’s also in 3-D. The trailer didn’t do much for me, but it does have plenty of wings flapping in slow motion. What do you think, will this be the next blockbuster franchise? Legend of the Guardians hits theatres on September 24th. Check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

  • Not sure what to think of this. Love 300 and thought Watchmen was perfection compared to the graphic novel. But this is such a change for Snyder, has his style I guess but is too bright. It feels lost between being for adults or kids.

  • Also! Owls? wtf?

Up until the WB logo I honestly thought this was an April Fools Joke… only early and not funny. I love Snyders work, but the only thing I can think of when watching this is… “My kid is gonna love this… and make me listen to it over and over again…”

One last thing I want to toss out there, How did the owls get armor?

“One last thing I want to toss out there, How did the owls get armor?”

    From the armor store silly.

  • this is catnip for Reed, plush toys on the hero’s journey.

  • Hey! flight scenes look quite good on 3d.. lets make a movie with talking 3dbirds to take full advantage of the gimmick! ..

we need to have those sweet expressive disney-avatar eyes though ..

Hey lets use Owls! they have round eyes they wont look weird..

  • Derek

    Where’s Harry?

  • Mike

wow Kyriacos, you sure seem to ignore the fact that this is based on a best selling book franchise.

I like Snyder, slow mo and all. I’ll probably see this, but i won’t be surprised if it struggles to find an audience and flops hard.

  • He did a very good job on watchmen, thats why his DVD sits on my shelve right now, but this mate looks …………,,,WEIRD

And of-course i ignore a novel about owls..

  • mitch

    im down for owls

  • Plush toys with armor? Nice…

  • Chris

Loved Watchmen, but not too impressed with this one. Just another CGI kids movie.

  • Napalm

the visuals look interesting but honestly i’m not digging owls as the main characters. owls being tough, wearing armors, is just plain silly.

Looks good. Just the type of movie Znyder should do, as he sucks at making live-action movies in my opinion. The only thing I am worried about now is his bad taste of music (Watchmen had good music, but some parts like that end with MCR was just brutal).

In a word, this looks ridiculous. Visually it’ll have plenty of cool moments, like all of his other films, but this path of the hero marketing campaign matched to the Harry potter font, is becoming extremely trite. I’ll always give this guy a chance because he has some talent for the visceral. For some reason I feel like I’d buy into this more as a hand-drawn animated film.

Watchmen is anything but perfection compared to the graphic novel, sorry billy boy cape (wasn’t bad, just meh, although the ultimate cut might win me over a bit). I really wanted to walk out of 300 (Very overrated bombastic bullshit). Dawn of the dead has been, for me, by far the most entertaining and interesting thing he’s done. Based on this trailer I’d skip this.

  • Wow, so coll! The spirit grasps in some moments :)
I will precisely look this animated cartoon at a cinema in 3D!!!

  • So amazing animation! Best 3D story in my memory. Cool! I love this film!

Honestly, I’m a freshman in high school, and I’m quite excited for this. The series is amazing – I completely understood what was happening when I read it in 4th grade, and I still enjoy reading them now. I can’t wait until September 24, and I’m planning to go see the 3D version opening night. Snyder’s done some awesome work, I except nothing but the best in this movie (considering there is some violence for a kid’s book)!

I think this movie will be great. Most people need a little bit of animation in their lives. If you don’t like it, it’s your opinion, but I’m excited about this. The book series was amazing, and now that there’s a movie, I’m sure many readers will be interested. Guardian’s of Ga’Hoole is related in a few ways to the Silverwing series, and Warriors sagas. I’m sure fans of those books will be quite interested in these.
