Gilligan’s Island: The Movie is Happening

The parade of nostalgic TV being transplanted to the big screen continues this week as Warner Brothers and Atlas Entertainment have announced that a Gilligan’s Island feature film is in the early stages of development. Their plan is to take the popular ’60s sitcom about a group of people shipwrecked on a tropical island and modernize it for contemporary audiences. Brad Copeland (Wild Hogs, Yogi Bear) will write the screenplay with the blessing of original series creator Sherwood Schwartz, who will executive produce along with his son Lloyd. Richard Suckle and Charles Roven will produce (yes, Charles Roven of The Dark Knight fame).

As it turns out, this isn’t the first we’ve heard of this project. Back in late 2008, there were rumours swirling that Michael Cera might play the bumbling Gilligan. Perhaps the idea isn’t as crazy as it sounds… Brad Copeland was also a writer and producer on Arrested Development. At the time, there was also talk that they wanted Beyonce Knowles to play Ginger. What do you think, can a Gilligan’s Island movie actually work, or will this be just another The Dukes of Hazzard or Bewitched?

  • I can’t believe I’m saying this, but this actually might be funny, in the same way that first Brady Bunch movie was funny.

  • Shit movies like these are clearly just cash grabs, but wouldn’t they stand to make more money by rebooting this as another TV series? A couple of movies doesn’t really compare to the amount of coin they can make if it finds success again on the small screen and runs for several seasons.

  • I think this movie wont disappoint us as The Dukes of Hazzard or Bewitched? did. Lets hope for more fun !!

    If those writers and producers are involved and they can put a smart spin on it, it could definitely work. The Brady Bunch movie was great because they made fun of themselves.

    I think Beyonc eshould play Ginger Grant because Beyonce has a good body like Ginger Grant’s.I think it will be a very funny and a great movie!!!!!!!!
