Angelina Jolie Ditches Wanted 2 for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity

Just days after Timur Bekmambetov’s Wanted notched a massive $50 million opening weekend, there was already talk of not one but two sequels coming down the pipe. Soon after, both James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie had reportedly signed on to return, and although some might scratch their head at Jolie’s involvement, it was obvious that without her, a sequel would not be nearly as successful. Would it even be worth making Wanted 2 if she wasn’t on board? Well, it seems we now know the answer to that question, as Jolie has reportedly dropped out of the project, and Universal has responded by immediately canceling the sequel.
Vulture has the scoop that Angelina Jolie has dropped Wanted 2 in favour of a new film from Children of Men director Alfonso Cuaron called Gravity. The movie is described as a space thriller about the only surviving member of a space mission, who is trying to return home to her daughter on Earth. Cuaron co-wrote the script with his son Jonas, and Warner Brothers have now picked it up, despite the fact that it’s seen as “artistically challenging” (Jolie would be the only character on-screen for most of the movie). Although I did enjoy Wanted, I think it’s pretty clear that Jolie made a smart choice here. I seriously doubt that a Wanted sequel would have turned out well either way, and I think we’re all pretty excited to see what Cuaron can do to follow up Children of Men. Rest assured, we’ll have more on this intriguing project as it develops.
