Bad News for Superman Reboot: David Goyer to Pen The Man of Steel?

supermangoyer

Less than a week after Warner Brothers denied reports of Christopher Nolan overseeing a new Superman movie, we now have another scoop that would seem to further support evidence of his involvement. According to a tipster over at Latino Review, the next Superman movie now has a writer attached, and his name is David S. Goyer — the very same David S. Goyer who co-wrote Batman Begins and The Dark Knight with Chris Nolan.

Now, a couple of weeks earlier we heard that Goyer would also be collaborating on a script for a third Batman movie with Christopher Nolan’s brother Jonah, and at the time, I voiced my uncertainty about Goyer’s writing skills. If he is indeed writing the screenplay for Superman, then it probably means that he will be more hands off for the next Batman flick, which makes me happy. On the other hand, it means that I am now a little bit less interested in the Superman movie… so be it.

Latino Review also found out a few other tidbits about the proposed reboot. Taking a cue from The Dark Knight, apparently it will be called simply The Man of Steel and it will not be an origin story. The rumoured villains for the script are Lex Luthor and Brainiac. Brandon Routh will not star, and Bryan Singer will probably not direct. Any other questions? I’m not sure how seriously to take all these extra details, but at the very least, Goyer and Nolan seem to be on the project, which should inspire confidence in many fans. Personally I’m going to reserve judgment until we find out who might direct this flick. So what do you think, can Goyer come up with a better script than Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris did for Superman Returns?

How is that bad news? He wrote the Blade movies (All good except Part 3), and he wrote Batman Begins and co-wrote Dark Knight, both of which were amazing.

Agreed Slushie, Goyer’s good work has outweighed the bad. He wrote Dark City for heaven’s sake and he even wrote and directed a very underrated drama called ZigZag with Wesley Snipes.

I would love to see Donner comeback and direct Superman again. That would be amazing but I am not sure if he could updated it for today. What an awesome experiment at best and I would love to see it.

Projectgenesis, it just seems like people would rather remember ONLY the bad projects a director/writer/actor, ect does then the good ones. Yeah, Goyer has had some real stinkers, but he’s had MORE hits. And most of his stinkers are ones he’s directed himself. I keep saying he’s an excellent screen writer but a horrible director. As long as he’s not directing this movie, then this is great news. He’s a very huge comic nerd and he knows his shit when it comes to the world of comics and comic adaptations.

David S. Goyer is not the reason Batman Begins and The Dark Knight was great films. Christopher Nolan is REAL talent behind the franchise. For anyone that as seen last Blade film (the first two were okay, but are not masterpieces), The Invisible, and The Unborn knows that Goyer just isn’t in the same league creatively as Chris or his brother Jonathan Nolan.

“Goyer and Nolan seem to be on the project, which should inspire confidence in many fans.”

Why do people think that just because Goyer is involved means that Christopher Nolan is as well. I honestly don’t see Christopher Nolan doing a Superman film at all. To me Superman doesn’t seem to fit his style. The dark and grit will work for Batman, but I’m not sure if it will work for Superman.

At this point they’d probably be best off just using a new Superman film to segway Smallville onto the big screen. I’m not a fan of Smallville but I bet it’d do better than Singer’s film. Superman’s inherently hokey and kind of hard to adapt to the big screen without cheese. On the other hand you don’t want to betray the character by going too dark. A big screen Smallville flick seems like the best bet as there’s already an established tone, fanbase, and cast.

“I keep saying he’s an excellent screen writer but a horrible director.”

I’m sorry but I don’t believe that Goyer is a excellent writer or director. To me he ranges to pretty good to just okay. Also, Goyer both wrote and directed The Unborn and he co-wrote Dark City with Alex Proyas and Lem Dobbs so his creative contribution to that the film is kinda of unknown.

  • Chris

not bad news. im happy to hear they are even doing another superman.

  • Do we need another Superman?

  • Kyriacos

i watched ”Batman and Superman public enemies” last night.. So gay..

  • El Ultimo Hombre

I’m all for a new Superman because I didn’t like the last one. Something on par with Batman Begins/The Dark Knight. Just like Batman, let them keep doing it until they get it right. And Goyer didn’t “write” The Dark Knight, he only has story credit. Sure, he’s got some good comic book stuff under his belt but has he got the vision?

  • I wonder if Goyer will be able to write something without gay undertones?
BLADE 3 was a good example of this.
That movie is the product of a “gay man with too much power”…I mean, c’mon…THAT wasn’t “Dracula” and he loved so Ryan Reynolds so much, he couldn’t take his camera off him!
    Snipes was NOT pleased!
