Monday Morning Box Office Report: Shutter Island Tops Weekend Hotspots

boxofficefeb22_10

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Shutter Island had a big opening weekend, in fact, the biggest ever for this duo as it earned $40 million over 3 days, which is almost as much as the combined opening for The Departed, The Aviator, and Gangs of New York. Looks like Paramount may have made a wise choice in delaying it to February after all. Valentine’s Day dropped to a more reasonable number after its insane opening weekend, while Avatar was hot on its heels at #3. Percy Jackson and The Wolfman rounded out the top 5. It also amazes me that Tooth Fairy is still continuing to make money in small increments, having just passed the $80 million worldwide mark.

1. Shutter Island — $40.2M
2. Valentine’s Day — $17.2M
3. Avatar — $16.1M
4. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief — $15.3M
5. The Wolfman — $9.85M
6. Dear John — $7.3M
7. Tooth Fairy — $4.5M
8. Crazy Heart — $3.02M
9. From Paris with Love — $2.5M
10. Edge of Darkness — $2.21M

  • Well it kind of makes since that it would do so well, you’ve got the star power of Leo, a interesting genrey plot that will appeal to mass audiences, and of course it’s one of the few big releases in theatres lately. Recipe for success!!! :D It all kind of reminds me of Cape Fear…
