No, Seriously: Meccano to Make Erector Set: The Movie (in 3-D)!

In case you haven’t been keeping up with Hollywood headlines lately, it seems that a number of big studios have been locked in a battle to see who can option the most ludicrous property possible. There have been announcements about all kinds of board games and classic toys getting picked up for feature films including Monopoly, Battleship, LEGO, and even View-Master. While I don’t actually believe that most of these will ever see the light of day, it seems that studios can’t help stockpiling brand names just on the off chance that their competition manages to produce a hit from one of these playthings. As ridiculous as some of these may be, I think Helix Films may take the cake with their latest acquisition.
According to a press release, Helix has inked a deal with the Meccano Toy Company to make a movie franchise out of their long line of construction toys known as the Erector Set. Plot details are currently being kept “under wraps” (yeah, you definitely wouldn’t want that secret getting out there), they are aiming to make a “family fantasy/adventure”. Oh, and as you probably can already guess, it’s going to be in 3-D. So let’s see, not only are they making a movie about a building set, but they’ve also got a brand name that will evoke snickers every single time it’s mentioned. Sounds like a slam dunk to me! Helix is a fairly new production company with only a pair of movies in development so far (I’ll See You Again and Eddy Deco). After making decisions like this, I’m pretty sure they’ll be in the movie business for a long time to come.
