National Lampoon’s Vacation Series Gets a Reboot

Well I think we all saw this coming. Just days after HomeAway.com launched their Super Bowl ad campaign which included a 14-minute mini-movie featuring Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo reprising their roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold, New Line Cinema has re-announced their plans to resurrect the Vacation franchise. The only difference is that now, instead of developing a sequel, they’ve decided to reboot the entire series! Yay!
Last year it was announced that Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin had been hired to produce a sequel to the original Vacation. It appears that he will still be involved, but now Variety reports that Jonathan Goldstein (The New Adventures of Old Christine) and John Francis Daley have been hired to write the script.
Chase will likely appear in the film, but the story focuses on his son Rusty who takes his own wife and kids to Wally World, which is about to close down for good. Still sounds like a sequel doesn’t it? Don’t be silly, it’s “more of an ‘update’ than a sequel” and “closer in tone to Planes, Trains and Automobiles“! Something tells me that is all just a way to sell it to studio execs who are only interested in reboots or remakes as of late. Either way, are you on board for a brand new Vacation?
