National Lampoon’s Vacation Series Gets a Reboot

vacationreboot

Well I think we all saw this coming. Just days after HomeAway.com launched their Super Bowl ad campaign which included a 14-minute mini-movie featuring Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo reprising their roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold, New Line Cinema has re-announced their plans to resurrect the Vacation franchise. The only difference is that now, instead of developing a sequel, they’ve decided to reboot the entire series! Yay!

Last year it was announced that Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin had been hired to produce a sequel to the original Vacation. It appears that he will still be involved, but now Variety reports that Jonathan Goldstein (The New Adventures of Old Christine) and John Francis Daley have been hired to write the script.

Chase will likely appear in the film, but the story focuses on his son Rusty who takes his own wife and kids to Wally World, which is about to close down for good. Still sounds like a sequel doesn’t it? Don’t be silly, it’s “more of an ‘update’ than a sequel” and “closer in tone to Planes, Trains and Automobiles“! Something tells me that is all just a way to sell it to studio execs who are only interested in reboots or remakes as of late. Either way, are you on board for a brand new Vacation?

  • I’m definatley on board. I loved the original Nation Lampoons with Chevy.

  • “have you ever bop’d ur baloney?”

I’d love to see Anthony Michael Hall reprise his Rusty role, been awhile since he’s done a comedic part.

    i’m surprisingly not against this.

  • YO MAMA

I know he is all over the place now but…Zach Galifianakis as Rusty any one?

Why are people afraid of the word sequel. Everything doesn’t have to be a reboot.

Sounds like the term ‘reboot’ doesn’t really apply. It’s still to take place within the original storyline, although they violated that a lot with the interchangeable kids. But here’s a proposal. That Filmjunk become the first movie blog/podcast/site to ban the use of the word ‘reboot’.

I watched Night of the Creeps last night, where Rusty is the star. Will Jason Lively get to reprise his role of Rusty in the new film? We can only hope.

Weren’t there different kids in each one? I forget. Anyway I think Chase is too old. He doesn’t seem to get better like wine like some others -Bill Murray, Walter Mathau…With the Rusty reboot I guess, it is really going to come down to the script. They can come up with something funny and it will get laughs but will it be “Vacation”? I don’t think so. It would be like trying to recast Ghostbusters or something. 70’s and early 80’s comedies were totally different then, you can’t update an modernize them because it is the time capsule aspect of them is a big part of why they are classics.

Chase is good enough on Community, but you’re right, he is not the same as Murray, that’s for sure.

  • Phil

Jason Lee should be in this

  • Nick

    Will Ferrell for Rusty

“You got Pac-Man? No. You got space invaders? Nope. You got Asteroids? Na but my dad does, can’t even sit on the toilet most days.”

It’d be a dream if Will Ferrell & Cheri Oteri played the main characters, Thatd be movie gold right there
