Tropic Thunder screenwriter Etan Cohen (not to be confused with Ethan Coen) has been riding the success of that film over the past couple of years to land some pretty big projects. In addition to writing Men in Black 3 and the Candy Land movie based on the popular board game, he was also supposed to be writing a Sherlock Holmes comedy starring Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen until Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes put that on hold for the time being. Now this week he has picked up two more gigs, one of which will find him behind the camera for the first time.

According to Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood, Cohen will direct Daddy’s Home, a comedy that stars Will Ferrell and Ed Helms. Ferrell will play the prototypical man-child who gets married, only to have that woman eventually leave him after they have kids in favour of the boring but stable Ed Helms character. (Ferrell later enters the picture to reconnect with his kids and wreaks havoc on the household.) The script was originally written by Brian Burns (Entourage), with touch ups by frequent Ferrell collaborators Adam McKay and Chris Henchy.

Cohen’s other new gig involves writing a movie based on the popular MuSuNaHi website (Museum of Supernatural History), a blog that covers strange paranormal happenings and conspiracy theories. The idea would be to turn it into a wacky adventure about a guy who runs a covert organization to “seek out and protect the world’s best-kept secrets”. It doesn’t explicitly say that this will be a comedy, but it seems like that is probably a safe assumption, and I am guessing Cohen’s experience writing Men in Black 3 may have helped him land this particular job.
