Monday Morning Box Office Report: Avatar Sticks it to Mad Mel

Seven weeks after its debut, Avatar is still holding strong at #1, and on pace to overtake Titanic for the domestic box office record sometime this week. There is certainly nothing standing in its way, as no other movies have even come close to stopping its reign thus far. As far as this weekend’s new releases go, Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness grossed a mediocre $17 million, while the Kristen Bell rom-com When in Rome earned just $12 mil. The Tooth Fairy and The Book of Eli rounded out the top 5, while Legion slipped all the way down to #6. Both Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel still continue to make money as well, remaining in the top 10. So how long will it be before someone finally breaks Avatar’s stranglehold on the box office?
