Flight of the Conchords Co-Creator to Direct Jason Segel’s Muppet Movie

It’s been almost two years since Jason Segel and Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller were officially hired to write a script for a brand new Muppet movie. Segel’s killer puppet show at the end of Forgetting Sarah Marshall was what inspired him to make the original pitch to Disney, and they totally bought it. Since then, however, the project has been sitting around waiting for a green light. This week, we finally have some good news to report: the movie now has a director, and that director is James Bobin, co-creator/director of Flight of the Conchords, and former writer for Da Ali G Show!

As a big fan of both HBO shows, I am pretty optimistic about the announcement. Although I was kind of expecting either Segel or Stoller to be the ones to see it through, I think Bobin should be a capable choice. Based on the fairly inoffensive humour and music video interludes on Flight of the Conchords, he makes a lot of sense fpr the gig. According to Vulture, he turned down a Judd Apatow project in order to take on The Muppets, so hopefully it pays off. He will replace Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who were in talks until they decided to go for Jonah Hill’s 21 Jump Street movie instead. So let’s get things moving already! The Muppets are primed and ready for a comeback.
