Gremlins 3 in Development in 3-D?

Looks like those pesky Gremlins are on the loose again, as another report has surfaced this week about a possible sequel to the popular ’80s franchise. Could a third Gremlins film finally be happening? According to MarketSaw, Gremlins 3 is indeed in the early stages of development, and is being planned as a stereoscopic 3-D release. This follows up on previous reports that Ghostbusters 3 is also being prepped as a 3-D movie.

Truth be told, there are news stories popping up every day now about big tentpole releases being planned as 3-D films. It’s not really “news”. In the case of Gremlins, however, it makes a lot of sense… especially since director Joe Dante returned to PG-13 horror last year with the 3-D film The Hole. However, if I remember correctly, Joe Dante said he would never direct another Gremlins movie. Not so much because he wouldn’t be interested, but because he went so completely crazy with Gremlins 2: The New Batch, that the studio won’t trust him anymore. What do you think, is the time right for a third Gremlins movie? Should they get Joe Dante to direct, or should someone else take over the reins?

    Dear, Hollywood.

STOP MAKING 3-D FILMS! And while you’re at it, stop making so many reboots/remakes. If you guys have ANY talent left, make some original stuff. Geez.

I’m not that big on the whole 3-D fad right now, but it seems to be that big franchises that a lot of people have forgotten about (ie. Ghostbusters and Gremlins) could benefit from jumping on the 3-D bandwagon. They may not necessarily benefit from a creative standpoint, but from just drumming up more audience interest. Which is never a bad thing.
