HBO’s Boardwalk Empire Teaser Trailer

boardwalkempireteaser

Ever since The Sopranos ended its run in 2007, HBO has been struggling to find a suitable replacement to keep their male subscribers happy. They’ve been doing okay in the half-hour comedy department, but in terms of serious dramas, the only shows currently going are Big Love and True Blood — not exactly the most manly of the bunch. Could Boardwalk Empire be the Sopranos successor that they’ve been looking for?

It seems like a pretty safe bet, considering that they’ve brought Martin Scorsese on board to direct the pilot episode and executive produce. The series is also being headed up by The Sopranos writer/producer Terence Winter. It’s a look at the New Jersey mobsters of old, back in Atlantic City during the Prohibition era, and the cast includes Steve Buscemi, Kelly MacDonald, Gretchen Mol, Michael Pitt, Michael Shannon and Michael Stuhlbarg. The first teaser trailer has recently been released, and yeah… it’s not particularly exciting. Either way, I’m still expecting this to be a pretty solid show. Boardwalk Empire is expected to debut in late 2010; check out the teaser after the jump and see what you think.

Future critics soundbites: “it’s deadwood meets the sopranos”,”HBO pour us another one”.

What a great area/time period! I wish I could see what’s going on in that video better, but I’m pretty pumped all the same. :D

I hate how pretentious HBO is with their dramas. This along with the David Milch/Michael Mann show about freaking HORSE RACING are perfect examples. The reason why True Blood has been such a huge hit and struck a chord with the audience is because it knows it exactly what it is- a fun, trashy, popcorn show, it’s the same reason why Big Love is doing solid for them. HBO seems to be focused on producing boring crap- Tell Me you love me (a show trying just way to hard to be “edgy”), In Treatment(who wants to watch a show about therapy?) and John from Cincinnati (probably one of the top 5 worst shows of the decade).

That teaser was pretty boring, but I’ll check it out.

When was the last time you turned on HBO? Those shows were all of two years ago and “John” was very quickly cancelled, wasn’t it? I really enjoyed the last season of “Hung” (assuming you wanna classify it as a ‘drama’) and there’s been some great comedies, “Life and TImes of Tim” and “Eastbound and Down” to name the better, newer ones. HBO definitely has had some lame programming on (“True Blood” and “Bored to Death”), but I would hardly say that everything they put out is “boring crap”.
