Nice call Goon on the “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” recommendation, I’m surprised this is still an unknown show in Canada. If you haven’t seen their Christmas special yet I recommend it but it’s probably funnier if you get to know the characters a bit more beforehand. A case study in comedic misanthropy. On “The Mighty Boosh”, adult swim started showing shortened episodes from the 3rd series this year (I believe), I love that show. The BBC discs have the uncut episodes, not sure what is on that Special Edition 1-3 DVD, the BBC version or what we got on adult swim in the states.

In regards to Greg’s distaste for Diablo Cody dialogue: I recently watched “Jennifer’s Body” and my buddy was saying the same thing before it started, he hates Diablo Cody’s made-up teen slang but for me it just seems like she’s doing what John Hughes did in the 80’s. I was just starting middle school when Hughes went on his teen tear starting with “Sixteen Candles” and I don’t recall anyone ever acting or talking like his characters. It was an idealized portrayal of teenagers, which I think works with comedy. However, if you don’t like teenagers I can see the addition of this overly witty dialogue would grate on your nerves.

    Another good episode btw, thanks!

  • Who is Greg?

  • KeithTalent

    Mantastic Mr. Fucks!

I swear I have a tie between A Serious Man and Inglourious Basterds for my #1 of the year. I have watched both of them 3 times and I waiver back and forth between them every time I watch one.

Wondering if Jay, or anyone, saw We Live in Public. I thought that was an awesome documentary from 2009 about the rise and fall of an internet pioneer and visionary named Josh Harris.

  • Goon! love your rant on Avatar.
Truthfully, I had zero interest in it, but was blown away by it.
I actually ducked out of the way to avoid a gas canister that I swore was going to hit me.
This movie, should be moved to theme parks and be treated as an experience.
It will be a shame when it’s theatrical run ends.

  • fuckingshit

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia sucks. It’s jokes are tasteless, unoriginal and dry. Believe me. I’ve seen 4 seasons of it (something i regret), and the fourth season was one of the most awful seasons of all time. The Christmas Special was even worse.

  • Goon

Why would you sit through that many episodes of something you dont like

    yes, and..?

  • rjdelight

As for clips not featured in the last show – Greg’s trip to the Buffalo border. I was surprised it wasn’t featured.

  • nice, calling listeners and visitors to the site “fucking idiots” on the podcast when they make humorous posts trying to incite discussion. I guess I won’t be donating anymore money to the site, sorry Sean.

  • Goon

I thought it was clear from how over the top it was that I was kidding around. I think I also called everyone who thought Memento was going to be on the top 20 a jackass.

I didn’t realize the post of yours I referenced was meant to be humorous though – with all the hate that came at every pick it got harder and harder to discern what was anger and what was play.

  • Sorry to single you out Rus. I think the point being made was simply that it’s impossible to please everyone.

  • Goon

…and besides, his points on the Wrestler (and Avatar) were taken seriously and did lead to several minutes of discussion on the show. :/

yeah you got singled out, but it was basically a means of me readdressing what I wrote in response to you, about it having as Sean described “The Four Basic Food Groups”. And yes like Sean said, its another ‘cant please everyone’ thing since every top 20 pick on the podcast addressed the objections.

  • I must be cross eyed Goon, is there an apology between the lines of your responses?! Why is Sean apologizing for YOUR ACTIONS? One thing is clear – you are causing Filmjunk to lose money.

  • Rus, I think your over reacting, Goon was just kidding. Besides what do you expect when he’s on the show? He’s pretty much the voice of the message boards, if Sean called you a fucking idiot I think that’d be lines for stopping donating money. (Not insulting you Goon, I always enjoy it when your on the show, in fact the “A Serious Man” episode was one of my favorites from last year.)

  • KeithTalent

Agreed with everything Drew said, it definitely felt tongue-in-cheek to my ears, especially after hearing Goon on the show in the past. I love it when he is on.

  • Rus: Your donations and support are always appreciated but please don’t try to use that as leverage to get Goon to kiss your ass. Believe me, donations are only paying a small part of Film Junk’s bills right now.

I don’t think he was out of line, as your overly enthusiastic criticism of our Best of Decade list surely deserved some friendly ribbing in return. Don’t you think?

  • Goon

I’m not sorry for singling out your opinion to disagree with. I’m sorry that my humorous intentions were unsuccessful with you, and that an explanation apparently isn’t good enough.

I’d be more sorry to Sean Jay and Greg that I could cost them a donation than I am that you were offended. I think you’re taking it too seriously.

I will say though that talking about money kind of has the opposite effect on me than you probably want, like you’re buying an apology. It kind of cheapens it. You’re the John, I’m the Whore, and Sean is the Pimp.

  • Mrespony

The last time I paid for an apology I had to get some antibiotics to stop the burning…OOohh!

  • Henrik

Rus: Goon used to piss me off all the time, but after a certain amount of time, you realize he’s sincere and therefore harmless.

You posted in a public forum, the people you talk to react in public. It’s not a big deal, I’ve been called an asshole on various podcasts, and have had my opinions dismissed by Greg on the podcast with a pretty direct “If Henrik said it, who gives a fuck?”, but that hardly dissuades me from participating in the website. If your comments are meant to impress the people behind the website, I think you’re on Mission: Impossible.

I guess the difference is I would never donate money to Filmjunk in the first place. I mean they’ve got ads on the site, they are tainted!

  • Henrik

“He’s pretty much the voice of the message boards”

What a great way to put it. And from reading Goons comments, you should know what sort of voice he has, it would not change just because he was on the podcast.

I mean I guess you could complain that such a non-neutral guy who actually participates in the discussions on the website and has opinions towards content and other commenters get to participate on the podcast (sort of like unfair teams), but he has been around for years and years. All you can do is hope that Jay succesfully bullies him to leave the website for good.

  • yeah, I tried to help the guys out cause I appreciate the work they put in to providing a public forum for film chat. they are young and fail to realize in the world of discretionary income its the little things that matter – there are plenty of film related things I can support. I don’t have to justify why one place turns me off from another, its usually a feeling.

probably Jay could of helped out since at least his remarks to participants is usually in the general.

Greg could probably help Sean with his backward business philosophy of “donations are only paying a small part of Film Junk’s bills right now” I don’t understand the logic in that, so you kill off the ones you have?

in the end this whole episode feels like The Movie Blog; people associated with the site going out of their way to make it personal and mocking and they seem to not like criticism in film posts about their choices?! why did you have a response section in “best of” posts if you only wanted positive feedback?

  • Rusty James

@ in the end this whole episode feels like The Movie Blog

    uh oh.

  • Henrik

Why did you comment if you didn’t want a response?

Nobody asked you not to donate, they only asked that you do not feel it gives you special priveledges, which I think is THE ONLY way you could ever open up to donations. Remember these aren’t americans, they don’t necessarily feel responsible to their sponsors.

I think you’re the one coming off as taking things way too personally, and trying to hang yourself up on the cross. For gods sake, you critisized their opinion, of course they are going to disagree with you.

  • Rusty James

You should tell Cory he reminds you of Campea, and Jay that he reminds you of Rodney.

I’ll just be ducking for cover over here.

  • KeithTalent

“Remember these aren’t americans, they don’t necessarily feel responsible to their sponsors.”

    WTF does that mean?

  • They can choose to call me whatever they want, by name, race, gender, whatever

I can choose to stay or go, I can choose to donate or not

    its very simple

  • Falsk

    Go. GO. Please go.

You aren’t the fucking executive producer here where the more money you give (DONATE! You’re DONATING) should amount to the weight of the show’s opinion.

It’s three guys, sitting in their home talking about movies. The audience chooses to listen because we get enjoyment out of it. Do you pay your friends to agree with whatever bullshit opinion you feel is important and needs supporting?

    Grow the fuck up.

  • Kasper

Way to overreact rus_in_chicago. It’s pretty clear that Goon – although failing at it – was trying to be humorous about the whole thing, trying to recapture some of Jays usual charm when he calls people fucking idiots, morons, etc.

If you get this uptight over such a small thing, perhaps it’s time you get off the Internet and stay off.

Just kick back, relax and take it for what it is; Goons poor attempt at comedy (hey, we’ve all been there!). You’re making yourself look like a douche continuing onwards with the bitching.

  • o.k. I’m done, call me whatever you want, no skin off my back, I could care, but I’m not paying for it.

    issue over

    good show as always

  • Colin

Seriously, Rus. I think your responses here have generally come across as pretentious and childish in equal measure. Henrik was dead on in observing that a donation shouldn’t mean exemption from being called a fucking idiot.

Of course you have the right to be offended (even though it’s dumb) and stop donating, stop listening, whatever, but I personally think it’s pretty immature to cause such a stink over something so trivial as a disagreement of opinion.

  • Colin

But then again, maybe I’m “too young” to understand.

  • Henrik

    “WTF does that mean?”

Nothing major, just one of my digs at America. I like doing them quite abit. Not that I wanna get into politics or anything… :-).

In all seriousness, it was a playful jab. As rus has pointed out, feel free to be offended and not pay me for it.

  • KeithTalent

Oh no, I’m not offended at all, I just did not get it. I’m not American, so go ahead and make as much fun of them as you like!

  • Primal

First of all FJ doesn’t feel like TMB. There’re really isn’t a lot of circle-jerking going on in here compared to that dead site.

I’d say we have many different voices putting out their opinions here to have great discussion.

Calling someone a “fucking idiot” on the podcast where they can only defend themselves on the comments is a bit harsh unless you have the rapport and established banter where that is acceptable. Apparently, to Goon and Rus,they don’t.

Maybe it’s time FJ tries using skype again and have listeners call-in to contribute to the show sometime? I know it changes the whole dynamic of the show, but I think it would be cool to hear the FJ community on the podcast.

  • Henrik

“Calling someone a “fucking idiot” on the podcast where they can only defend themselves on the comments is a bit harsh unless you have the rapport and established banter where that is acceptable. Apparently, to Goon and Rus,they don’t.”

Yeah, I think this is a great point.

  • Rusty James

@ Calling someone a “fucking idiot” on the podcast where they can only defend themselves on the comments is a bit harsh

yeah, I wanted to say something like this but couldnt’ find the right words.
It’s different when you do it on the podcast and the other person’s not there to speak up for himself.

  • Scott45

I had to struggle to get through this episode. Can we please put an end to any future episodes with Goon.

  • Henrik

Fucking classic bits in this episode.

Mr. Fucks, and all rape is just a misunderstanding. Sean, you’re sick!

  • Goon

“Maybe it’s time FJ tries using skype again and have listeners call-in to contribute to the show sometime? I know it changes the whole dynamic of the show, but I think it would be cool to hear the FJ community on the podcast.”

There were major problems with it on Talkshoe, but I think if something was set up in UstreamTV with a special call-in Skype number it could work, even if only in place of the Junk Mail for that week.

  • I relistened to the clip. I can see why Rus might have taken it the wrong way, especially when he’s not familiar with Corey. I don’t think Rus was being a douche by complaining about it, he had a right to be offended. I just didn’t like how he brought the donations into the equation, it seemed a bit petty. But that’s your decision Rus, and I’m sorry you feel that way.

In response to what other people have said, I agree, I generally don’t like calling people out or referring to specific comments on the podcast, especially since there are plenty of people who listen to the show that don’t even take part in the discussions on the site. With the Best of Decade stuff, however, it felt like we were going over the movies specifically to address some of the general feelings people had about each movie, so that’s how it came about.

Rus, I’m not saying your comments on the Best of Decade posts were out of line. Disagreements are fine, and I know you weren’t being 100% serious. It’s just that the tone of some of those posts were a bit aggressive, which naturally also attracts passionate responses.

And as far as this being like The Movie Blog… the difference is, we didn’t delete any of these comments.

  • Henrik

“we didn’t delete any of these comments.”

Or re-edit the podcast to make yourself seem innocent.

  • Goon

I thought Rus knew me better than he did through these boards, and I thought from what I knew of him that he’d take ribbing a lot differently (maybe even if he didn’t think I was kidding), especially after all he’s written in the past. I was just plain wrong on both counts.

Sean basically said anything more I would add about the situation regarding the donation remarks or the Best of list.

  • Rusty James

but Jay is kinda like Rodney.

  • Goon

The only thing I would disagree with Sean about is I obviously like it when theres references to the boards on the show, because I hope it would encourage more people to be aware of and thus get involved with the community (even if it means you risk get called a fucking idiot by some smug jackoff). Most podcasts that ignore their community, frankly, kinda suck.

  • Well, I know you better, no apology.. nicely played sir. You are a hard nut to crack. I actually laughed when you did the bit and did enjoy it. I was going to respond with, “Goon did my Filmjunk audition for for me” Then I was going to rag you but I knew you guys would just say “fuck you” again. So I decided to stir it up and knew the donation comment would get a response, maybe even an apology from Goon. He didn’t wavier – asshole thru and thru.

Sean, sorry for your trouble, I’ll donate again this year.

  • Goon

I don’t know how to take your comment, rus. So… you DID get the joke… but you decided to pretend you were offended to test how we’d react if you were going to withhold donations?

I actually took your comment very seriously, rus. The second I read your initial comment and was surprised it didnt get the reaction I expected, I emailed Sean and asked for advice on what to say to you, because I don’t ever want to be his burden, and I knew then that I clearly didn’t know you as well as I thought I did. If it weren’t for your donations comments you would have had a straight up apology.

You have my full permission to follow your initial instinct to just rag on me back next time I refer to you as anything other than a gentleman and a scholar.

I mean you were pranking this whole time? Last time someone pulled a fake on me like that, it was my high school girlfriend pretending a volleyball pole fell on her and broke her leg and that she was in the hospital, testing my reaction to see if i really cared. That didnt work on me either, when I found out she was testing me it was over. I’m a Goony Pig, not a guinea pig. ;)

  • “Last time someone pulled a fake on me like that, it was my high school girlfriend pretending a volleyball pole fell on her and broke her leg and that she was in the hospital, testing my reaction to see if i really cared.”

Dude… your High School Girlfriend sounds amazing… XD That must of been a crazy relationship, a real keeper that one.

  • Goon

I was 17 she was barely 15, its not that shocking really. but I panicked and called the hospital and was about to order flowers and hail a cab, and then she calls and says “You passed the test!”

  • You forced my hand Goon because you didn’t play fair and ragged me in the podcast, therefore, I followed your lead and didn’t play fair. I could tell you guys were emailing because there was a delay in the responses. I also figured I could get Greg involved because of his business / customer relations side. I really figured you would have apologized, you are as stubborn as my dad. (my dad hates me by the way, not really, probably)

  • The Forced Hand

    S H I T

    J U S T

    G O T

    R E A L

    ! ! ! ! !

  • Glendon

And I did guess the last 3 spots in the top 20 of the decade, Goon. I await your apology for this grievous oversight.
