Roger Ebert’s Top 10 Mainstream and Indie Movies of 2009

eberttop10_09

Various “Best of 2009″ lists are finally starting to come out of the woodwork, and it won’t be long now before they’re all blurring together. But if you only read a few of these lists before the end of the year, one that always deserves a look is Roger Ebert’s. Even though you may not agree with all of his reviews, he’s still the de facto standard for film critics, and he usually manages to throw a few interesting picks into the mix as well.

This year he has done something a little different: he decided to do two separate top 10 lists, one for mainstream Hollywood releases and one for independent films. This allows him to give recognition to a lot of movies that no one has had a chance to see yet. Most of his mainstream choices are fairly straightforward, but the one that’s sure to spark the most controversy is Alex Proyas’ Knowing. Check out both of Ebert’s lists after the jump, or read his full write-up on the subject. Do you agree with his picks?

What the hell is up with that picture? It looks like he wants to touch me in my special place. Creepy as hell.

I’m surprised how few of the indy films I’ve seen. I’ll have to look into those.

did twilight’s ‘new moon’ title push Duncan Jones’ ‘Moon’ out of everyones consciousness.

Everyone who saw Moon loved it but it’s getting no love in these 2009 lists.

  • Brendan

    @ KeithTalent:
Uh, the reason for the picture is Ebert has had multiple surgeries related to thyroid and salivary cancer, and complications that occurred along the way. Among other things, they had to remove part of his jaw, and he has lost has the ability to speak. So the fact that he’s even able to smile, even if it seems “creepy,” is pretty amazing.

  • KeithTalent

Moon would make my list for sure.

I feel bad for saying this but someone needs to put that picture in the middle of a movie, like the cock in Fight Club.. That would blow peoples minds..
